Anthony Thomas “Tom” Parrino

…was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, October 4, 1911. He married Theresa and they settled in Flushing, NY where he became a proprietor of a butcher shop in Woodside. Tom and Theresa had the honor of working at the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing. In later years, they settled in Uniondale. It was a small house but with the largest and best garden which he loved to tend. Theresa died in 1991.

Tom enjoyed going to OTB. It was there he met Marie, Denise’s mother in 1995. Although Marie was much younger than him, it was a great match. The twinkle is his eyes told all. They did fun things together such as restaurants with Marie, her nieces Karen and Robin, telling stories to George and Greg, and enjoying each others company. Tom drove until he was 92. Tom at the wheel, Marie the co-pilot telling him when to “Go, Stop, Turn, Oh My…”

After selling his house, he moved in with Marie. He later moved into “Sunrise Assisted Living” in East Meadow where he spent 3 glorious years. As Tom became frailer, he moved into Hempstead Park Nursing Home. Before Marie died in August 2008, they spent the last week of her life in the same room together. It was “All The Buzz” at Hempstead Park!

Tom died April 15, 2010 at Age 98 and ½. Tom lived through quite a lot history, from Great Depression to now. He was funny, dapper, very inventive and will surely be missed.

Dear Dr. Gill and Staff,

My family and I would like to thank you for all the years of service you gave to my Mom, Marie. To all the girls who answered all her phone calls, thank you for your patience. To all the girls who took her vitals and history each visit, thank you for waiting for her to catch her breath so she would get a better reading. To Crystal who would give her those fancy breathing tests (which she hated, but some how managed), thank you for counting with her, so she could get through the tests. And also Crystal, for somehow being in Winthrop Hospital on Thursday, July 31, thank you for giving her encouragement.

Dr.Gill, thank you for giving us the extra years with Mom. I know she couldn’t have done it without you. She had a week in Winthrop Hospital, then her final week in Hempstead Park nursing home for rehab (in the same room with her sweetie Tom). She always had the book you told her to read “Daily Word for Women” with her. She read it often and we found many passages underlined and notations inside for us to find. She kept telling us she would die on Aug 15. We tried to keep her going but she died the next morning Aug 16, back at Winthrop.

You remember the story of the chairs that she tried to fix, but fell inside the seat? Well, I inherited them. I’ll try not to fall in the seat, like Mom…

Thank you again for all your years of caring.

To All who was a friend of Marie Mellone,

We thank you for your condolence cards and kind thoughts after the loss of our beloved Marie. She was a wonderful Daughter, Sister, Mother, God-Mother, and Nana.

My mother Marie enjoyed her 5.5 years at Mitchel Houses very much. She may not have looked sick but she had C.O.P.D. which is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. When she had better days, she enjoyed going to the Senior Center, play cards, talk to friends, sing karaoke or just relax. Physically, she sometimes had severe shortness of breath while trying to have conversations. Emotionally, she sometimes felt anxious or panicky. Socially, she needed extra planning to get seated at a table near the door, or by an outlet for her breathing treatments. Marie did not like to speak about her illness.

So, if you helped Marie get a cup of coffee, held the door for her, or got her a seat, my family and
I would like to thank you for your respect and kind deeds.

We thank for your support during this difficult time.

Regards…Marie’s family (Denise, George, Gregory)

Dear Aunt Marie,

You were my Aunt and Godmother for almost 51 years. We shared so much history together. Memories way back when I was little visitiing you in Woodside in your little apartment. Memories of the fun times our familes had together in Uniondale during the summer parties and the holidays when we were ALL together.. it seems so long ago. We called you Aunt Ree Ree when we were little and found it so hard changing your name to "Aunt Marie" when we became teenagers. As we grew into adulthood, we became very close. We had so much fun at the family gatherings.

After mommy passed away, I felt you were an extention of her. You helped ease the pain and sorrow in my life. I missed her so much, but I still had you, and now I don't, and I just miss you so so much. I wasn't ready to loose you so soon. I think about you everyday, Aunt Marie, I look at the clock and remember our conversations and our laughter over silly things.

Since you've been gone, so many times I want to pick up the phone and tell you something........ but I can't. I can only remember .... I know you will visit me in my dreams soon, like mommy, daddy, David, Anthony and Nanny does. When I would tell you when I had a dream about mommy, you would ask me "how is she?" And I would say "she's good", ... Now it will be your turn to visit me, and I when I wake up, I will thank God for letting me dream about my loved ones........ That is all I can ask for....
I'll be waiting for that dream... I love you so much..........Till we meet again............

Love , Karen
