Frances Drago Obituary

DRAGO – Frances, died after a brief illness on August 6th, 2008. Devoted daughter of the late Ellen and Hugh G. Smith, New York Times' Dublin correspondent. Beloved mother of Maria. She is sadly missed by her loving family and friends. A funeral service was held in Dublin, Ireland on August 16th. Born in the Dublin suburb of Clontarf, as a young woman Frances emigrated to New York, working briefly with American Airlines and Alitalia, followed by a decades-long career at Sabena Belgian World Airlines. She loved to travel and did so extensively with her daughter, visiting Europe, South America and Asia. Frances' other great love were animals: the cats and dogs that were her faithful companions over the years, and animals that she would see on trips to Buenos Aires, San Diego and Rio de Janeiro. Contributions in her memory can be sent to the Animal Lovers' League, 40 Shore Road, Glen Cove, NY 11542. A memorial Mass will take place Saturday, September 27th, 9:45am at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Glen Cove, New York, followed by a reception at Glen Cove Mansion.

Dear Maria, I too was saddened to hear of your Mother's passing away. I have so many fond memories of the many years spent with your Mom at Sabena. We also had lots of fun times together at our Company picnics & parties. You were the apple of her eye & she was always so proud of your accomplishments. My heart & prayers go out to you in this difficult time & hope you find comfort in the many special memories of your beloved Mom.
Love, Betty

Maria, I too am very saddened at the loss of your Mom. Working with her at Sabena for so many years is something I will never forget. I can still hear her saying (in her 'never-lost' Irish brogue), 'Oh Good Mother of God'! She will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Maria
Not only did I have the pleasure of working with your Mom, I was able to travel with her. Our trips to Texas or Florida to go house-hunting, line dancing, seeing Mickey, and sightseeing were always an adventure!
Always a smile, a joke, some good advice or her stories of you will be how I remember her always. She will always have a special place in my heart, thank you for sharing her with us.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with your mother. She was always so helpful to a newcomer, with a smile and patience. She will always have a special place in the hearts of all the former colleages.

Maria, I had the privilage of working with your Mother at Sabena Airlines. Her dry sense of humor was what, at times, kept us going in the madness of our days. I suspect that she is up there, watching and smiling at us. Helene

Maria,
Your Mom was a true and caring friend, who will be missed by all those with whom she came in contact. Know that you were the light of her life and everything she did revolved around how it would affect you. She so loved telling stories about you, your career with the UN and your travels together.
Love, Pat
