To the Schreiver Family,
Being with Red was always a happy event. He had a way of lightening up some rather dull math and chemistry classes.
I also had the privilege of playing both basketball and football with Red. As easy as he was to be with in class, he was a fierce competitor under the "boards"
Red was a significant missing piece of our 50th class reunion.
My prayers are with you and the family.
With depest sympathy,
Walter Lapple

Dear Phillis,
I never had the pleasure of meeting you. In fact, I haven't seen "Red" since he graduated from the Prep in 1956. I was his physics instructor and a bare 4 years older then he was. It was my first class and I have fond memories of that year and of Rich. I was looking forward to seeing him again at the 50th reunion but I understand now why he was not there. My prayers are for you and his family as you adjust to life without Rich. Please know that even as a young man, he made a lasting impression on me. I am sorry that I was unable to follow his growth as a man and a human being but knowing him as a young man, I am sure that he lived up to the early promise he showed.

To Red's Family: Red was one of my favorite athletes. He never rebelled at being corrected, but usually he turned the correction into a smile for both of us. He always gave it all he had! I had not seen him since he left Concordia, and I'll bet you think I haven't thought of him since -- but I have: the freckles, the mop of hair about to blot out his vision if it fell any further down his forehead. The memory of someone well-lived and a person well-liked is when he lives on in heart and memory. For me, that's Red Schriefer!
May the Lord comfort each one of you, bring peace to your hearts, and, as He has promised, "...wipe away all tears from your eyes."

"Red" brought a unique energy and needed humor to our classes at Concordia. Though talented as a basketball player and end on our football team that went to Havana, he was always humble, low key and kind to all of us. His family can certainly be proud of his distinguished career and commitment to serving others. My deepest condolences to all of you who knew him best.

Dear Phyllis,
I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I was a Concordia classmate of Red's and a teammate of his in both football and basketball. He was one of those "unforgettable" personalities in life that one is blessed to have known. I had so looked forward to re-connecting with Red at our recent 50th Reunion, but now understand why that was not possible. My prayers are for you, your children, and grandchildren.
With deep sympathy,

Dear Phyllis and family members,
It may be more than a half-century since last we met in person, but Dick/"Red" was never one to be forgotten. He provided more fun-filled moments and memorable experiences for the Concordia Prep Class of '56, than any other single individual. We missed him at recent reunions; now unfortunately we know why. May God strengthen all of you at this difficult time in life. "Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon him!"

Dear Phyllis and family,
It is my sincere prayer that you find peace in our Lord Jesus as we all await the final reunion in Heaven when we shall meet again. I have kept the Prep class apprised of this news and pray for continuing peace for you and your family members.

To the Schriefer family:
My sincerest condolences on your loss. Richard had an indomitable spirit, a true fighter and more importantly a survivor. He faced his problems with courage and one can only hope to have the same strength during adversity as did he. We at MSKCC shall miss him.
with fond remembrance and love,
Susan Slovin, MD
