Soren Solberg Obituary

SOLBERG - Soren, on October 6, 2008 of Baldwin. He was born November 6, 1911 in Arendal, Norway to Klara and Axel Evensen. Seven siblings pre- deceased him in death Thyra, Olga, Erling, Arthur, Kristen, Bjarne and Birger. After spending 38 years in his homeland, surviving WWI, an epidemic of the Spanish flu, the Great Depression and the German occupation of WWII. Soren developed a wanderlust and together with his wife, Gudrun, and two young daughters, emigrated to America in 1950. Settling first in Rockville Centre then Merrick, he made his home in Baldwin and lived there for 56 years. He mentored many people throughout his 96 years. Those who knew him were inspired by his work ethics and values. A devout Lutheran and man of great morals he was a true pioneer of his generation. A man of great stature, dignity, and extreme pride of his family, he is survived by and will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 68 years, Gudrun, and daughters Torun and Else-Britt, son-in-law Lester, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews in Norway. Arrangements were handled by St. James Funeral Home. Interment at St. James Episcopal Cemetery, St. James.
