My hero and friend. We fished and had fun together. I remember trying to make a "perfect" martini for him, and had to drink 3 before I got the mixture he liked...good Navy man. As a fellow retired Navy Captain from a later generation, I will always remember him as the the ultimate Officer and gentleman...following his positive personality and good sence of humor was a key factor in my success in the Navy! My wife, Wallis was best friends with his daughter Mercy, who also died way too early. Lucia and Rob are great people and our thoughts are with them.

I really enjoyed Al's war stories and am humbled at his contributions to the freedom of our country.

Though I never met mr. Barthes, he was my mother's (Cleo Barthes) cousin and I have always felt a closeness to this family. My sincerest regards to his daughter Lucia and the rest of the Barthes family.

Al and I were cadet classmates in 130-C at Pensacola in 1939. He was an outstanding person, golfer and Naval Aviator as well as a very dedicated family man. My deepest condolences and sympathies to his family.
Without question he will be deeply missed.
