Herman Tietz

TIETZ - Herman, longtime resident of Port Washington, passed away on November 26, 2007 in his 87th year. Devoted husband of Vera. Beloved father of Larry (Janet) and Gladys (David) Mercier. Cherished grandfather of Lauren, Geoff and Meredith. Dear brother of Rosalie Jasen. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and a great-granddaughter. Herman emigrated from Germany in 1933 and served in the U.S. Army. He was the grandson of Oscar Tietz, the founder of Hermann Tietz Department Stores, which prior to its Aryanization in 1934, was the largest privately-held retailer in Europe. In his younger days Herman enjoyed skiing, tennis and traveling and in his later years became an avid bridge player. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 29 at 10:30 AM at Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, 55 Station Plaza N., Great Neck. The family will observe shiva on Thursday, Satuday and Sunday at 7:30 PM and visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 PM at the residence of Vera and Herman.
