I wasn't alive during Katrina, but I heard that someone I know survived Katrina because they didn't leave their home and survived, and they're brave for that.

February 13, 2017

I recently visited New Orleans, and I was truly moved by the incredible people who inhabit this treasure of a city. Hearing people's stories about Katrina and how their lives changed as a result of the disaster made my heart ache and compelled me to learn more about the people and city that survived Katrina. Hearing stories of those trapped in Memorial Medical Center, Orleans Parish Prison, the Superdome, and on rooftops left me aghast at the hardship that so many people endured and the loss of so many lives. I cannot begin to imagine how incredibly difficult it would be to see something like this happen to your home, your family, your friends, and your livelihoods. But what I saw during my time in New Orleans was not a wounded city or damaged people; it was the most vibrant thing I have ever seen in my life; I saw a great American treasure full of wonderful people and incredible history and culture. I want to give my condolences to those who lost loved ones, and though I am not from New Orleans, I hold it and all its people very dear in my heart. My heart goes out to the people of New Orleans.

8/29/2005 is a day i will never ever forget. I would never like to re live this particular day however at this point and time, at that time, no one was better than the next person. For the first time ever, I saw black and white come together like sisters and brothers. Everybody helped and cooked and fed everyone that was around. I would like to thank the red cross truck for meals on wheels. They really came in handy when we didnt have electricity for two weeks, and no water for 15 days. This day will alway be remembered

Still we feel the devastation of lives and properties from Katrina.
Our immediate family members are safe and relocated to a higher
area of the city but still are damaged by the devastation. Our hearts
and prayers go out to those still suffering.

Hello and God bless from New York City: My husband Ricardo was living in the Pontalba on Jackson Square when the storm hit. He came up to New York in September 2005 when his seafaring union was pretty much washed into the Gulf. We met when I was teaching a class, and married in 2008. I consider myself a 'NOLAN' by marriage and we had the early copy of Chris Rose's powerful ONE DEAD IN ATTIC. I have two family members with Alzheimers here in NY. But, soon as their care is arranged, Ric will return to New Orleans; I'm coming with him. In honor of those who did not survive Hurricane Katrina? We will roll up our sleeves with loving resolve, lend our energy to the rebuilding which will take another decade..and maybe add some new flavors to the gumbo. We remember and honor those lost, in our prayers. And we look forward to bringing our energy and dedication to this remarkable, amazing place! A city, one character says in the series TREME, "lives in the collective imagination of the world!"

It has been quite a while since this tragedy yet i am still broken hearted over the tragedy. To the families, friends and the world that still weeps may the following make your day just a bit better:At Psalm 56:8 David pleaded to God: "Do put my tears in your skin bottle. Are they not in your book? Like David I know that God is aware of your pain and whatever you are going through emotionally. .. let him help you he knows what you need. (Jeremiah 29:12) . . .And YOU will certainly call me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to YOU. . .

From the hills of West Virginia I still consider the Gulf Coast my home. I feel at peace when I am there I enjoy sitting on the beach at night and feeling the wind blowing in my hair and silence as if God is talking to me. It's the greatest, words can't explain. The Gulf Coast people are strong spirit and will come back with strength and will power like never before. Sad to see the loved ones that are gone but they were loved and continue to be loved and will never be forgotten. Thank you to the families of the place I call home the Coast of Mississippi.

Benny sadly passed away only one week shy of the one year anniversery of that storm. He died from a massive heartattack. He will always be remembered and never forgotten. Paulette and family

It has been 5 yrs since Hurricane Katrina forever changed my life and the life of my family. As a survivor I now live in East TN with my daughter and granddaughter. My family is torn apart due to this horrible woman named Katrina. My son is far away from me back in Waveland MS. The scars of this personal tragedy will be taken to the grave with me. Life goes on buildings rebuilt but lives and hearts never rebuild. Always remembered and painfully so.

"The Lord moves in mysterious ways". I never thought I would be happy living outside of New Orleans. But, God sent me to Lake Charles, La. (by my only brother) for safety and later my new home. I cried a many days watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, not knowing whereabouts of some of my family members and friends. I thank God everyone survived, but now we are in Tex, GA, Ark, LA, MS & Calif. This experience has reinforced or taught us that life is very precious, material things are irrelevant, family is important and God is still in control! May we never forget or be ashamed of where we came from! I love New Orleans and miss it, but I thank God for blessing me with a "New Beginning" where I can continue to Worship HIM and serve my fellow brothers and sisters. My prayers will continue to be for the restoration of New Orleans and its people. Love, Blessed Purple Lady

That was truly life changing for me. I was only 11 years old sitting on my roof watching the water rise. I lost many friends and family. But Mississippi is slowly rebuilding. Now being 16 and looking back, I see how my lifes course was changes. It was terrifying for me. But I had my family. and somehow down the road i ended up in texas. Bay St Louis is a far way from texas.

May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

May the wonderful memories of your loved one continue to provide comfort to you--until God's promises are fulfilled. Matthew 5:5; Psalms 37:29
