Lucy Maroni Obituary

Lucy R. Maroni 1910 - 2008 NORTH ADAMS Lucy Richardson Maroni, 98, of North Adams died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at North Adams Commons. Born in Brattleboro, Vt., on May 5, 1910, daughter of James Sheraton Smith and Ellen Lucy Ware Smith and granddaughter of Orrin O. Ware, she graduated from Raymond High School in Raymond, Wash., in 1927, after which she returned to Wilmington, Vt. She graduated from the Bliss Business School in 1929. She worked for several years in the office of the former Arnold Print Works. On Sept. 30, 1933, Lucy married Albert Angelo Maroni of Readsboro, Vt. They resided in North Adams until 1936, after which they moved to Readsboro, where Albert took over his family's business. During World War II, Lucy headed the Bennington County USO. She later became interested in the Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund of New York City and served as chairman in Readsboro and again as co-chair in North Adams with Mrs. Fred Perry until well into the 1960's. Lucy and Albert joined St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams in 1942. She was a member of St. John's Guild, the Altar Guild, Daughters of the King, and for a short time, the choir. She taught kindergarten and pre-kindergarten Sunday School for over 30 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fortnightly Club, and the Houghton Round Table. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert, in 1982 and by her son, James, in 2003. She leaves a daughter, Jane Ellen Maroni Williams, and her husband, E. Mark, of Holden; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Tisdale Maroni of Lee; six grandchildren, Michael J. Maroni, James L. Maroni, Michele L. Simler, Elizabeth Norberg, Katharine A. Williams, and Christina L. Williams, and 11 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Marissa, Michael, Steven, Brady and Alexandra Maroni; Nicholas and Jacob Norberg; Mark Willams, and Daniel and Molly Simler A sister, Jane Wright Smith, is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral for Lucy Maroni will be Thursday, July 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Church. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Morningside Cemetery in Brattleboro, Vt. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., will be Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. Donations may be made to St. John's Church in care of the funeral home.
