Brother Victor Monette, C.S.C. 1936 - 2008 WILLIAMSTOWN Brother Victor Monette, C.S.C., member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas, where he was living in retirement. He had been a Holy Cross Brother for the past 47 years. Born in Williamstown on July 11, 1936, son of Victor E. and Teresa Repholz Monette, the Monette family made their home in Hancock and were communicants of St. Raphael's Church in Williamstown. Victor received his elementary education in Clarksburg, graduating in June 1950. He received his high school diploma from Drury High School in North Adams in June 1954. He was awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Boston College in 1958 and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. From 1958 to 1960, he was a teacher at St. Michael's Indian School on the Zuni Indian Reservation in Arizona. He joined the Congregation of Holy Cross on June 26, 1960 at St. Joseph Juniorate, Valatie, N.Y., as a candidate for the Brotherhood. He received the habit on Aug. 22, 1960, and pronounced his temporary vows the following year. He pronounced his perpetual vows in August 1964. Brother Vincent spent his religious life in the education apostolates, conducted by the Holy Cross Brothers in Connecticut, New York, Rome, Italy, and Texas. From 1962 to 1966, he was a teacher in the business department of Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Conn. From 1966 to 2006, he exercised his knowledge of economics in the finance offices of Pius XII Agency in Chester, N.Y.; Notre Dame International School in Rome, Italy, and at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. He was a member of several national economic groups: the National Economic Association; the National Business Teachers Association; the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, among others. In 2003, he received the President's Award from the National Association of Student Employment Services. Brother Victor retired from his position as Student Financial Advisor at St. Edward's University in 2006. After fighting cancer for the past two years, he succumbed to its devastation on the 11th of this month. He leaves his sisters, Kathleen Monette of Williamstown and Mary Monette of Eugene, Ore.; his brother, Donald, and his wife, Marval, and their children, Ronald and Donna, all of Williamstown. FUNERAL NOTICE: The wake service for Brother Victor will be Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Joseph Center, Valatie, N.Y. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 11 in the same chapel. Interment will follow immediately after the Mass in the Holy Cross Community Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Joseph Center Endowment Fund.
