Paula Gurrera Obituary

Gurrera, Paula Jayne (Brown), 46, Oceanside, California Paula Jayne Gurrera (nee Brown), a  long-time Tustin resident and graduate of Tustin High School and Cal State Fullerton, passed away on May 13, 2009, at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest. She had been a patient there in the Critical Care Unit for the past five months, bravely battling the complications of a thyroid storm and necrotizing pancreatitis. It was a sudden illness that took all of her loved ones by surprise. Paula was the youngest of four children, born to Jay and Yvonne Brown, on Oct. 18, 1962, in Santa Ana, California. Paula was a Customer Service Representative at The Orange County Register where she had worked for many years in her early twenties and was also an active member of the Children's Theatre Department at Cal State Fullerton, where she received a degree in Theater Arts.  For the past 20 years, Paula resided in the Oceanside area, where she and her former husband, Phil, raised three beautiful daughters. After joining the Santa Margarita Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she worked as a secretary for their meetings. She was always attached to her hometown of Tustin. She became a member of the Tustin Historical Society and often volunteered as a docent for Old Town Tustin's Home and Garden Tour. She was preceded in death by her parents, and is survived by her three teenage daughters, Danielle, Amanda, and Allison; her brother, Steve Brown;  sisters, Kathy Santy and Karen Wood; and numerous relatives. Paula's strong faith, kindness, friendliness, and gentle spirit will always live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30, at Generation Church, 1106 Whaley, Oceanside.  Interment will be with Paula's parents at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, California. The family will have a private service there at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, the family graciously accepts donations to a Memorial Fund that has been set up for Paula's daughters. Please make checks payable to:  "Paula's Girls, c/o Kathleen Santy," and mail to: California Bank and Trust, 675 Carlsbad Village Dr., Carlsbad, California 92008.  A special thanks to all who have supported Paula and her family throughout her illness.

It was a heartbreak to hear of Paula's serious illness, and to visit with her over the months that have ensued. So many friends have joined in praying for her daily and praising progress, followed by ups and downs that she suffered so couragously, never giving up that the Lord would heal her. She was such a sweet and caring friend and we all will miss her smiles and hugs. Our loving prayers go to her daughters, and family.

I was sad to read about Paula's death. I went to preschool, elementary school, middle school, & high school in Tustin with Paula and we kept in touch. It was great to see her at our 20 year reunion. We both ended up in North county. I will miss Paula, but will always remember how much fun we had in our childhood. My sympathy to her kids and family.

Paula's love for her daughters will always remain a shining light in my memory. We would often sit together when all our children were young and talk for hours on end. We both enjoyed antiques, gardens and lacy things. I miss her and our many talks.

I miss Paula so much, will miss her attendance at football games, lunches at Al's in the village, praying together, birthday lunches, talking about Dancing with the Stars and American Idol and so, much more. Linda Rosso

A true gentlewoman, gently born and raised. I miss her terribly and the world at large doesn't know the magnitude of the gift that has been lost.
