James Guion Obituary

James Louis Guion Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Lt. Col. James Louis Guion Jr., retired Army aviator with Senior Wings, died April 15, 2009, in Virginia Beach. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point (Class of 1950) with a B.S. in engineering, and received a master's degree from Old Dominion University. He was qualified in Army helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the 52nd Aviation Battalion in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal (three awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was professor of military science and director of the ROTC program at Old Dominion University 1969-1972. After retirement, he enjoyed working at the Cape Henry Hardware store in Virginia Beach and was an avid golfer. He was the son of Col. James Louis Guion and Dorothy Sublette Guion of Massachusetts, and was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Annette Ladd Guion, who taught at Norfolk Academy. He was a cherished Dad to Dr. Christopher James and Robin H. Guion, Annette Louise Guion, Jonathan Scott and Alaura Guion, Capt. Emmett and Suzanne Smith, Linda Tracy and John Williams. He was the proud Grandpa of Kim, John Christopher, Benjamin James, Tanner James, Ashley, Bryan and Trey (James Louis Guion III). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Martha Ladd Allee and family. The family thanks the staff of Westminster Canterbury for their extraordinary and compassionate care while he was a part of their community. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors July 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, P.O.
