James Palmer Obituary

QUEENSBURY James "Jim" E. Palmer, 87, of Queensbury, passed away, in the presence of his loving family, on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, after a long courageous struggle with cancer. Born on March 12, 1921, in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late Alton J. and Lena (VanKleeck) Palmer of Galway and Amsterdam. Jim was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School in Amsterdam and on March 25, 1941, he married Marion L. Louer of Amsterdam. In 1960, Jim and his family moved to this area from Canajoharie. A commercial artist for over 50 years, he worked for the former Arkell and Smith, at one time located in the town of Moreau. While there, Jim was a layout artist and created many nationally recognized designs for packaging. He was best known for making major changes in Aunt Jemima's face for Quaker Oats. Other package designs Jim created were for such national brands as Ralston Purina, National Biscuit Co. and Standard Brands. He worked freelance for many years and for several different companies in this area, including Sandy Hill, Valcour Paper Company, Stevens and Thompson Paper Company in Greenwich, Rist Frost Associates, Northern Homes and was advertising manager of Warner Pruyn Home Centers. Jim retired in 1988, from Genpak Corporation in Glens Falls, where he was the art director. He was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher for the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls and continued to be an active member in his later years as an Elder. Along with his wife, Marion, Jim was very involved with the Gideons International. Jim enjoyed playing the bagpipes for the Galloway Gaelic Pipe and Drums, and was a member of the Adirondack Pipes and Drums, serving as an officer in both organizations. He was past president of the Lower Adirondack Arts Council (LARAC). Jim continued his love of art for many years and taught weekly classes in oils and water color to seniors at the Queensbury Center. He was also a member of the Upper Hudson Valley Watercolor Society and the North Country Arts Center. Jim was a member of the Mastersingers, now known as the Adirondack Voices. Survivors besides his wife of 67 years include his son, Lauren Palmer and his wife, Susan, of Hudson Falls and his daughter, Suzette Usher and her husband, Jack, of Queensbury; his brother, Edward Palmer and his wife, Barbara, of Galway; his three sisters: Marion Elizabeth Cuckoo of Galway Lake, Shirley Vosburgh and her husband, George, of Gloversville and Dorothy Putman of Johnstown; his six grandchildren: Scott Palmer and his wife, Rene, of Glens Falls, Laurie Ecker and her husband, Lee, of Wilton, Matthew Palmer and his wife, Renee, of Heuvelton, N.Y., Stephanie Roberti, of Kingston, Maureen Usher of Queensbury and Brian Usher and his wife, Heather, of Queensbury; his 10 great-grandchildren: Hannah, Jeffrey and Jacob Roberti, Lauren, Bradley and Nicole Ecker, Katie and Jack Palmer and Benjamin and Samuel Palmer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Friday, June 27, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St., in Hudson Falls. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at The First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls with the Rev. Jeremy McDougall, officiating. Burial will be in Seeley Cemetery in the town of Queensbury, at a later date. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Gideons International, 2900 Lebanon Road, Nashville, TN 37214-0800, The First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls, 383 Saratoga Road, South Glens Falls, NY 12803 or The American Cancer Society, 959 Route 9, Mount Royal Plaza, Queensbury, NY 12804. Jim, a wonderful cousins with lots of artistic abilities. When Dave and I decided to start a company of our own, after Dave put in 30 yrs. at IBM, I knew just who we could talk to regarding the design for a company logo. He did a super job. I remember him as I was growing up. He was always a person I looked up to. I truly have nothing but good memories of him.

Dear Marion and family,
How we loved you and remember with joy your ministry at SGF First Baptist. It seems like yesterday that we were having fellowship with you and Jim. Your home was always open and we loved gazing upon yours and Jim's works of art. Jim was gifted by God in so many ways. He always gave God the glory and gave so much energy and wisdom and direction to the organizations he belonged to. He is now meeting for the first time those who came to know Christ because of the work of the Gideons. He is with Jim Black and Reg and Evelyn and their baby boy. He is hearing, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." 'Jesus, Ken and I praise you for giving Jim Palmer to this world. He is irreplaceable. Give comfort and strength to Marion and the assurance that Jim's testimony lives on here. Amen. ' Pilgrim, your work is done, you have stayed the course, you have overcome, you have honored the Lord with your words, manner of living and concern for the saved and unsaved. May your paintings (one you gave us, as well) speak of the Creator and His sovereignty. Only He is Lord of all. He arose. May all who read this but have not yet become born-again accept Messiah and become His child.
Our tears flow, but so does our love for you, Marion.
With love and many hugs,
Ken, Joan and David O'Connor, and Karen Gibson.

Marion & family, Time is no more for Jim as he was ushered into the presence of his Lord and Savior. Linda and i have fond memories of you and Jim from Hudson Falls to Amsterdam and now in North Carolina. I will always remember the pure testimony that Jim had for his Lord and Savior, never ashamed and always ready for an encouraging word to everyone. His talents where amazing and his love for his family was obvious to everyone but now he rest those talents in the presence of the Lord. Marion, our prayers are with you that the Lord will strengthen and sustain you in the days ahead. I know that Lauren and Suzie probably do not remember us that well if at all but they had a wonderful dad and still have a wonderful mom.
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Mrs Palmer , I'm so sorry to hear of your husbands passing .. My father and I met you both at Glens Falls Hospital in the family room on tower 2 . My Dad Noble Counter was a patient at the same time ..Jim brought a bright light to Dad that day because Dad loved to socialize..the conversation they had lead Dad to ask me every day to go see how the Palmers are doing ,That I did ...Both of you were a delight even under these difficult circumstances...You are truly blessed to have so many years with the one you love . He will be with you always ...My deepest sympathies . Lois L Counter

Marion,
Dave and I will always remember the time we visited your home. We were on leave from Japan where we lived for four years. Jim designed the logo for the Youth magazine I published for several years. He also designed the logo for Technology Concepts the company we started after we returned to the States. Of course, I have many memories as a child of you, Jim and your two small children. I know you will miss Jim very much. We are thankful you have both your children near by to ease the lonliness. We also know the Lord will be your strength.
With Our Love,
Dave and Ina
