Elizabeth Sherwood Obituary
ARGYLE Elizabeth Reid Tulloch Sherwood, Sept. 14, 1909–Feb. 25, 2006. Beloved wife of the late Roland Albus Sherwood (1910–1989), survived by her sister, Phyllis Jennings; sons, John Tulloch Sherwood and Douglas Reid Sherwood, daughters-in-law, Harriett and Gerda; four grandchildren: Elizabeth Wiseman and husband, Reese Wiseman, Jack Sherwood and wife, Ivy Sherwood, Katherine Sharma-Sherwood and husband, Yogesh Sharma, and Heather Sherwood Starcevik, wife of Thomas Starcevik; seven great- grandchildren: Brian, Clifford and Melissa Bell, Christina, James and Matthew Sherwood, and Deven Reid Sharma. Also niece, Linda Jennings Pinner and husband Jimmy, their two daughters and sons-in-law, and two grandchildren; nephew, Craig Jennings, wife and son, and nephew, Scott Massman, wife and daughter.
She was the eldest daughter of John Reid Tulloch and Ida White Tulloch. She had three sisters: Laverne Tulloch Massman, 1913-1998 and John Massman, 1909-1999. Phyllis Tulloch Jennings, 1919- and Royce Jennings, 1914-1975, Virginia (DeeDee) Tulloch, 1922-1933.
She was born on 112th Street in Manhattan, New York City and moved to Larchmont, N.Y., as a child. Her father was the first mayor of Larchmont, and her grandfather, Robert White, was the first mayor of Winter Park, Fla.
She played on the girls champion basketball and field hockey teams at Mamaroneck High School, 1924-1927.
She attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City, 1927-1930, and worked for Amelio Fortuni's custom design ladies dress shop until her marriage to Roland Sherwood on March 6, 1936. She was a homemaker for 70 years. She and Roland enjoyed almost 53 years together before his death on Feb. 18, 1989. She outlived her husband by 17 years and one week.
She and Roland lived in apartments in Larchmont and Mamaroneck before moving to their first home in Mt. Kisco, New York in 1950. They lived in Sydney, Australia for two years, 1951-1953, and then returned to Danbury, Conn. They moved to Maryland in 1955 where they lived in Laurel, Md., from 1956 until she moved to Bedford Court, Silver Spring, Md., in May, 2001.
She volunteered at the Prince George's County and Laurel Hospitals for 40 years and was recognized for her long and dedicated service to the patients.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Argyle, N.Y. with the Rev. Stephen McLean officiating.
