Carol Metz Obituary

QUEENSBURY Carol Metz of Queensbury passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, at The Stanton and Rehabilitation Centre, after a valiant struggle with brain cancer. She faced her illness with courage, determination and dignity, always maintaining a positive outlook and greeting visitors with a smile. Carol was born in Bronx, N.Y., on Dec. 2, 1942. She was the only child of James and Ernestine (Meister) Matthews. Carol's family moved to Glens Falls in 1948, where she attended Jackson Heights Elementary School and graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1960. In 1964, she graduated from Albany State University and earned a master's degree from the institution in 1965. She then moved to Long Island where she obtained a job teaching French at Island Trees Junior High School. In 1967, she married Charles Metz, also a teacher, and they made their home in Oceanside, Long Island, for 33 years. Carol loved the French language and was a member of the French Institute, Alliance Francais, in Manhattan, where she took advanced courses in French translation, literature, and creative writing. She wrote an award-winning essay, which was included in a book of essays published by the French Institute and she traveled with that group to France, Morocco and Quebec. In 2002, Carol and her husband fulfilled their long-time dream of returning to the Glens Falls area, where she would enjoy looking out the window and seeing the same mountain she had looked at from the childhood home on MacArthur Drive in Glens Falls. Carol loved singing and was a long-time member of her church choir on Long Island and later the choir at the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls. She was also a member of Adirondack Voices and continued to attend rehearsals even though she knew that due to her illness she would be too weak to participate in the performances. Carol was appreciative and grateful for all the cards, visits, meals, kind wishes and prayers from the loyal neighbors and other friends from Church of the Messiah, Seniors on Bicycles, the French Club at Queensbury Senior Citizens, the nurses and volunteers from High Peaks Hospice and the staff at the Stanton Nursing Home, all of whom helped her face her illness and keep her spirits up. Besides her husband, Carol is survived by her son, John Metz, and his wife, Amelia, of Trumbull, Conn. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at the Church of the Messiah, Glen Street, Glens Falls, with the Rev. Scott Harding officiating. Burial will follow at Pine View Cemetery. Family and friends are invited and may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury. Anyone wishing to make a memorial gift in Carol's memory may do so to High Peaks Hospice, 286 Glen St., Glens Falls, NY 12801.

Carol and I became friends in junior high school. I learned of her passing while photographing in China and just returned home. Carol sent me this picture several years ago after finding and framing my butterfly images at a nature center. I will forever wish I saw her in recent times. Her cheerfulness belied the gravity of her condition. I mourn her passing and hope my thoughts will give some comfort to Charlie, John and Amelia.

I smile when I think about your first day at Messiah. I was sitting in front of you in a pew mid way on the left side of the church and what a joy it was to hear you sing. I thought to myself how much fun it would be to play my oboe with that voice. I have and it was.

I loved singing with Carol in the Holy Trinity choir in Rockville Centre. We sang French carols together every Christmas and our Christmas services haven't been the same since she moved upstate. I miss her beautiful voice and her smiling face - especially at Christmas. I'm sure she's singing with the angel choir now. They must be so happy to have her lovely soprano.

So very sorry to hear of Carol's passing. Carol and Charlie were neighbors on Arnold Avenue, Oceanside, New York for over thirty years. We had six children and a very disobedient dog who might have driven other people to find a new home. Carol and Charlie were the kindest, most considerate neighbors. ..We will miss Carol's friendship and enthusiasm for life and will pray for Charlie, John and Amelia.

I'm so sorry that Carol is no longer with us. I sat next to Carol at Adirondack Voices for several seasons and enjoyed her warmth and friendly conversation as well as her beautiful voice. I'll miss her a great deal. We think of her often on Tuesday nights. My sincere sympathy to your family.
