Harold McMillan Bixby Caldwell

Harold Caldwell Obituary

Louisville, Ky. Harold McMillan Bixby (Mac) Caldwell died on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, Ky. He was playing tennis, a game he loved, when he was stricken. Mac was born on Dec. 26, 1942, in Louisville, Ky., the eldest son of the late Samuel Smith Caldwell and Frances Bixby Caldwell. He attended Anchorage Public School through the ninth grade, and graduated from Eastern High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He was a member of the Kentucky Basketball High School All Stars and helped his state beat the Indiana All Stars at the Butler Field House in Indianapolis. He entered the University of Virginia with a full athletic scholarship and received All-Conference honors as a high-scoring forward. Upon graduation in 1965, he served as a Naval Officer aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma City in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam. After completing his military service he moved to Atlanta, Ga., and earned a master's degree in business administration from Emory University. In Atlanta he met Cecil Birnie Lewis from Greenville, S. C. They were married in May of 1973, and moved to the Atlanta suburb of Buckhead. Their children, Bix, Clare and Julia were all born in Atlanta. In 1980, Mac and Cecil moved to Mac's hometown of Anchorage, Ky. Mac was a self-employed remodeling contractor for most of his working career. He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Anchorage Fire Department, and, at the time of his death, he served on the Anchorage Historical Society. He served many civic organizations. He was a member of the Louisville Country Club where his tennis skills earned him many honors. Mac was well known for his droll sense of humor. Everyone who knew him has a story. His children, nieces, and nephews all expected Mac to label them with some wonderful nickname or give them an absurd Christmas present. He was respected and admired for his great, good sense. He is survived by his wife, Cecil Birnie Lewis Caldwell; a son, Harold McMillan Bixby (Bix) Caldwell and his wife, Rebecca, and their two children, Lillian and Miller; a daughter, Clare Lewis Caldwell and her husband, Joshua Pincus; and a daughter, Julia Cushing Caldwell. He is also survived by his mother, Frances Bixby Caldwell; his three brothers: Samuel Smith Caldwell and his wife, Rayna, and their daughter, Abigail, Edgar Morsman Caldwell and his wife, Jane, and their children, Ruben and Samuel, Henry Adams Caldwell and his wife, Katrina Van Dyck, and their children, Harold and Charlotte and many nieces, nephews and cousins. His father, Samuel Smith Caldwell, died on Oct. 14, 1984. Mac loved to vacation at the family home on Lake George, N.Y. where his large, extended family cherished his sense of humor, his skills in tennis, water skiing, swimming, and boating, his wisdom and leadership in dealing with the complexities of family corporations, and his natural ability as a storyteller. He was a man of large, physical stature. Mac was an active member of his community, including the Anchorage Historical Preservation Commission, but loved nothing so much as an evening at home watching one of his favorite ball teams. He was, above all else, a beloved family man. A funeral service will be held at the Anchorage Presbyterian Church in Anchorage, Ky., on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at the Pearson's Funeral Home on Shelbyville Road in Middletown, Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made in Mac's name to the Kentucky Heart Association or Habitat for Humanity.

Living next door to Mac at an early age, Mac introduced himself to me as " McMillan Bixby "Big-foot" Caldwell. Mac was big ... bigger than life and always gracious. I will always remember his strength and humor.

I was extremely shocked to hear that Mac had passed away about a week after his death. I knew Mac from the many disc golf games we played at his family's vacation home on Lake George. I will miss Mac's easy manner, warm smile, and enjoyable stories which certainly are family traits. My only comfort in his passing comes from the fact that he was engaged in his favorite activity when he passed. My condolences and comfort are extended to all of his great family.

Mac was one of the "men" of the world...always a tad of a grin, always a witty word,a great hand at a Christmas bonfire for the city of Anchorage. He made the world a better place for those around him.

I have known Mac since the 1st grade, how sad it is to say goodbye to such a wonderful part of my childhood. He would always patiently wait to carry my bike across the creek on my way to school, sometimes leaving it their in the water to tease me but always returning to rescue me before I would be late for school. His sense of fun was always overcome by his graciousness and overwhelming sense of responsibility. He has certainly had a life well lived and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

There are only a hand full of people in this business that you look forward to working with because they are so upstanding and professional as Mr. Caldwell was. Cecil and Mac's children:

I will miss talking with Mac and him playing at our church picnic softball games. Today as they played 'taps' I saw a single-engine plane fly over and thought how appropiate. Mac has a dignitary flyover. Then a train comes down the tracks. It wouldn't be Anchorage without a train. And finally in the mist of all of the clouds, the sun shone through for just a moment. How fitting. I think this was God's way of saying that everything is OK. I hope you see that way, too.

God's Blessing to You,
John

Mac gave me my first job out of Eastern high in 1982.I worked for Mac for about 3 years before going off to EKU.The reason Mac's work was so sought after was because YOU DID IT RIGHT OR YOU DID NOT DO IT AT ALL!! Mac would show up on the job every morning with a "cup of Mud"(coffee)he would call it from Druthers in Middletown. He would give everyone their jobs for the day and go bid other work. He would sometimes say "come here Marcus I have a secret mission for you today,it is such a secret you can't tell anyone else" we would both get a chuckle out of those moments together. I would then find out what that would be.I cannot begin to descibe the knowledge that I learned from him that I still use today when fixing things around the house or things for others. CECIL my Heart goes out to all of you!!!! Steve

I was shocked to learn of Mac's death. We were classmates at UVA where he had many friends--primarily because of his wonderful sense of humor. We always enjoyed visiting with each other at class reunions, and I shall greatly miss him. The Caldwell family will be in my prayers.

I am so shocked and dismayed to learn that Mac has passed away. At times like this I feel my own mortality and am grateful for knowing and sharing high school experiences with Mac.

Mac was a "big" man, not just in stature, but in character. We all looked up to him. He will be sorely missed. He was a rock in the field; a great athlete who always came through in the clutch. He and his friends gave us all such great thrills on the basketball court.

My most heart felt condolences to his family and friends.

To Cecil, Mac's children, Mac's mother and brothers and Artie, too...Mac was so much a constant presence in our class, funny and accomplished, always ready to enjoy the moment even when we hadn't seen or talked to each other in ages, an extra tall big brother figure and mischievous nutty friend. I bet he had no idea how much he'd be missed, he was too busy having a good time and a good life. This isn't easy for a friend to bear. The comfort comes in having the good fortune to have good memories of a guy with a twinkle in his eye as he made a smart remark. He was such an easy good friend. I can't imagine a soul who knew him who won't miss him.

Mac Caldwell was a fellow we all looked up to in High School literally of course because of his tall stature, but we all looked up to him even more then and since because of his great character, friendship, loyalty, humor, and caring. He was a great star athlete at a very early age and through his great collegiate years but he carried his stardom with the utmost humility throughout his esteemed career.

He excelled academically, he excelled in business, he excelled as a husband and father. We, who graduated with Mac at the Eastern HS class of '61 will miss him beyond words.

For those of us who knew Mac and were fortunate enough to know him well during our formative years we by his example became better people. I being fortunate enough to share the same locker room in the gynasium most certainly became a better man.

My greatest sympathies to the family and all who grieve for his very premature passing.

Some may remember the picture of Mac with his girlfriend standing on a ladder to be closer to eye level because he was so tall and she was so short.

I have only fun memories of Mac. From the summers of the 1950's growing up at Lake George, to his always successful picnic events of the past few years. Mac was a wonderful listener and gave his sage advice, only, when asked. Thanks, Mac, we all will miss you!

Mac will be sorely missed in our interclub tennis matches, and I will miss his wonderful demeanor in our weekend paddle tennis games. He always brought a sense of decorum to his favorite sports.

November 13, 2007

I was lucky to know Mac and will always remember his smiling face and happy demeanor and I will miss playing with him on Tuesday LMIT.
I'll never forget a match Hunter & I played against Mac & Youno. Hunter was almost an hour late. He would call and say he was 10 minutes away every 15 minutes or so. When he finally arrived Hunter began a 5-10 minute stretch regime (never seen before I might add). Mac was so pleasant never letting anything but a smile sneak through. And never mentioning anything about a default or a rematch. All he wanted to do is play our tennis match.
And what a match it was. That I hope I will never forget.
