Patricia White Broderick

HUNTINGTON and CHESTERTOWN Patricia White Broderick, 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, after a very long illness. Born May 26, 1928, in Chestertown, she was the only child of the late William E. and Sarah Jane (Kelly) White. She graduated from Chestertown High School as valedictorian in 1947. As a young adult, she worked at The Atateka Hotel on Friend's Lake. In 1951, she graduated from The College of Saint Rose with a BA in English. At college, she was the chairperson of the Mariology Society for The National Federation of Catholic College Students. On June 7, 1952, she married James Dudley Broderick of Watervliet at Saint John the Baptist Church in Chestertown. The couple resided in Flushing then settled in Huntington. She was an accomplished copywriter for The Doubleday Publishing Company in Garden City. Besides the love of her family, she loved the genial beauty of Friend's Lake, traveling, gardening, music, art and the literary works of William Shakespeare. She enjoyed many annual tennis tournaments at Shanty Mac, reminding everyone, "It is better to have lobbed and lost, than never have lobbed at all." from Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem "In Memoriam: 27." Mrs. Broderick was predeceased by a loving daughter, Mary Pat. She is survived by a devout husband of 55 years, James Dudley Broderick of Huntington and their three sons: James Broderick of Huntington, William Broderick, his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Margo, of Chestertown and Michael Broderick of California; cousins are Elizabeth Foster of Pittsfield and Gene Kelly of Queensbury; sister-in-law, Jane (Laird) Broderick of Concord; nieces, Therese Broderick of Albany, Maria Broderick of Concord and Catherine Broderick of Cambridge, Mass. Services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations in Patricia's memory may be sent to those less fortunate at The North Country Outreach Center, P.O.
