Alice Flanigan Obituary

FORT MYERS, Fla. Alice M. Flanigan, 100, of Fort Myers, Fla., and a former resident of Hudson Falls and Rochester, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007. Born on May 2, 1907, in Lake George, she was the daughter of the late Ressie and Maude (Harris) Merrill and lived most of her long life in the Rochester area. Alice was a loving, generous person who found true joy in caring for others. In fact, she raised two families, the first being her four brothers because of the premature death of both parents, a responsibility she gladly undertook, which necessitated her withdrawing from her nursing school program. Several years later she married Leonard and raised their son, Robert. She also spent many happy years mentoring her two grandchildren, Kathleen and Michael. For all the loving care she bestowed on family, friends and neighbors, we are truly blest and firmly believe she is now in the eternal, loving care of our Lord. Leonard D. Flanigan, her husband of 66 years, died on May 9, 2003. She is also predeceased by her four brothers. She is survived by her loving family, a son, Robert Flanigan and his wife, Shirley, of Fort Myers, Fla.; a grandson, Michael Flanigan of Pacifica, Calif.; a granddaughter, Kathleen Flanigan of Tarrytown, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday morning, Dec. 14, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church on the park in Hudson Falls. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward. Online condolences may be made by visiting our Web site at www.carletonfuneralhome.com. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

Bob, Shirley and family: We were sorry to hear of your mother's passing. You were blessed to have her that long, but it is always difficult to lose your mother at any age. With warm regards, Frank and Helen Lanzafame.

Aunt Alice was such a special, caring and generous person. Her warm smile will stay with us forever. Jill and I tried to have irises (one of Aunt Alice's favorite flowers) delivered for the funeral. Somehow it didn't happen and we are sorry for that. We will treasure our memories of Uncle Len and Aunt Alice with love.

We regret the flowers did not make it in time to the funeral home so we were not be represented (Joyce and Jill). Aunt Alice had such a caring spirit and an energy that would not quit. She and Uncle Len in Rochester were my parents away from home while I was in college, and there I got to know Bob's family. Those days were special.

Your family has indeed been blessed to have Alice with you for a century. What a remarkable life span, but loss is never easy. My sympathy to the four of you; you will miss her.
