MAMIE DAVIS Michigan City, Indiana April 4, 1925 - October 6, 2006 Mamie Lee Davis, age 81, of Michigan City, IN, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at 4:45 a.m. in Adventist Glen Oaks Hospital, Glendale Heights, IL. Mamie Lee Davis was born on April 4, 1925 in Gholson, MS, daughter of the late Henry and Sadie Cotton. On September 29, 1945 in Laporte IN, she married Johnson Davis, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1998. She was a member of the Bethel AME CHurch where she was a faithful and loyal member, past president of the Alice B. Henson Missionary Society and the Willing Workers Club. She was a life member of the Indiana Conference of the AME Church Womens Missionary Society. Her good works extended into the larger city and county communities. She was a member of the board of the Martin Luther King Center and at one time served as its voluntary director. Avid quilter, she was a member of the Dunes Country Quilters. She traveled and spoke frequently about the history and importance of quilting in the slave era and was known to many by chosen moniker "The Quilt Lady". She was a longtime member of the NAACP, the Laporte County Juvenile Task Force and was a co-founder of the African Gardens at the International Friendship Gardens, Laporte County Visitors Bureau Board, Past affiliations also include the Elite Youth Center Board. She was honored by the Michigan City Human Rights Commission in 1991 as Humanitarian of the Year, and was the recipient of two J.C. Penney Golden Rule Awards in 1988 and 1992. She worked for Berko Electrics division of Wel-McClain and the Michigan City Area Schools. For many years operated carrier routes for the News-Dispatch. A lifelong learner, she continued her education at Purdue North Central and was honored as an Outstanding Woman in Education by the school in 1992. Surviving are 3 daughters, Angie (John Jr.) Robinson of Bolingbrook, IL, Peggy (Emery C. Jr.) Whitlow of Elmhurst IL, and Vicki (Eugene) Roundtree of Fairfax, VA; son, John C. (Calleen Engel) Davis of Bellevue, NE; 9 grandchildren, Kristyn Whitlow, Emery C. "Tres" Whitlow III, Gene Roundtree, Jessica Robinson, Jenelle Robinson, Charles Roundtree, J. Alex Robinson, John C. Davis II and Whitney Davis; 2 great grandchildren, Jazmyn Harmon-Whitlow and Michael Cooper III. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, William and Willie B. Cotton and sisters, Mary Frances Pruitt, Ruth Davis and Anne Williams. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the First Congregational Church, 531 Washington St, Michigan City, IN with Pastor Charlene Arrington-Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, IN. The visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Monday October 9, 2006 at the Bethel AME Church, 629 E. Michigan Blvd and Tuesday, October 10, 2006 from 10-11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Arrangements handled by the Ott-Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN. Contributions may be made to the Bethel AME Church, 629 E. Michigan Blvd, Michigan City, IN 46360 or to the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth and Community Center, 805 Martin Luther King Dr, Michigan City, IN 46360. I wish so much that we had been able to attend the funeral. Peggy, Angie,
Vicki and John - please know how much we love you and how much we, too,
will miss her. We'll be in contact soon. You've all got so much to be
thankful for and proud of with regards to the life your mother led and
the fine example that she set. Take care and take it day-by-day!
