Frank Calabrese Obituary

CALABRESE, FRANK E. SR., 82, - of Galloway, passed away quietly at home on Friday, August 1, 2008 with his loving wife and family by his side. Frank was born in Atlantic City and spent the majority of his life on Mississippi Avenue in the Ducktown section of the City. He attended St. Michael's Grammar School and Atlantic City High School. In 1944, at 18 years of age, he joined the Army and proudly served his Country in World War II. He was sent overseas and was stationed in Italy where he attained the rank Sergeant. Upon returning from the war in 1946, he rejoined the love of his life, Frances. They married in 1948 and raised three children. Frank enjoyed the Italian neighborhood where he was affectionately known as "Sonny" and worked at the Venice Restaurant, Sereni's Market and Panarelle's Bakery. He was a member of St. Michaels Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and served as an Usher. He was an accomplished plasterer and a member of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local # 33. He was a member of the Atlantic City PBA #24 and served as a Board Member of the Atlantic City Police Federal Credit Union, serving well into his retired years. In 1983 the family was forced to move because of the Casino boom and left the great Italian neighborhood for Galloway Township where Frank loved living in the country. He then became a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. Frank enjoyed traveling with his wife to Italy and made several trips out west especially enjoying California. In 1980, on a trip to California, he unexpectedly ended up as a conant on "The Price is Right" which he enjoyed immensely. He had a love for family and friends and enjoyed his travels to New York to visit family. One of the biggest John Wayne fans around, Frank could name all of John Wayne's movies. Up until the time of his passing, Frank would always ask to go to Harrah's where he had loved to play blackjack and go to the Island Diner with his good friend Sam Rando who was his Police partner and whom he missed very much. Frank is predeceased by his parents Giovanni and Anna (nee Revecchio) Calabrese. Frannie & kids,
What loss for all that knew my cousin Sonny. I cherish so many memories of sonny when i was a kid growing up in Atlantic City. Going to mass and coming over to see Sonny& uncle John, then going over to Gramdmoms. I know he is with my Jesus now & has no more pain or worries. My prayers are with all his family, and Sonny "see ya when I come home"
love your cousin

To Aunt Frannie and Family. I am sending my deepest sympathies and condolences on the passing of Uncle Frankie. My mother always told me while growing up of how special all of our relatives were who lived down the shore. So much love and happy times that I know Uncle Frankie was a part of; his love, goodness and distinct character will carry on forever as he watches over all of us from his place in Heaven above.
Love,
Chris (Christopher) Kelly

To Aunt Frannie, Johnny, Roseanna, Frankie and all of the family, I am so sorry for your loss. Uncle Frankie was definately one of a kind. He was a wonderful person who always made me smile. I have so many great memories of sitting outside of your house on long ago summer nights, with his parents next door and Grandpop right up the street. I look forward to the day when we are all together again. You are all in my prayers.

To the Calabrese Family: From the bakery to the police department and then into retirement, that's my time with Sonny. Sonny always had that wonderful, warm smile; always gave you the greatest greeting and nicest wishes. Truly a wonderful person. Truly the best God gave us and now back with God. Sonny made this world a better place. The deepest sympathies from me and on behalf of my family.

To the Calabrese Family,
You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
I was lucky enough, this week, to reflect with some friends, about growing up on Mississippi Ave. and told a number of great stories about all of you and one of my favorites was, when we would miss the jitney or bus, Sonny would pick us up and if we were lucky, drive us home in his police car ...
Sonny rest in Peace!
