Joan Hughes Obituary

Published by The Press of Atlantic City on Sep. 3, 2008.

HUGHES, JOAN L., 75, - of Pennsylvania, PA. She was born and raised in Pennsylvania and spent all of her summers in South Jersey with her family. Joan met and fell in love with William Hughes and they married on September 1, 1950 at St. Ann's Church. She was a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church for many years before moving to Florida and becoming a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. She and her husband Bill raised eight children in Wildwood, where they owned and operated the family business, Hughes Market. During those years Joan had gone to college and received her associates degree. She became an avid tennis player in which she encouraged her children to become involved in. She was very involved with every aspect of her children's lives and supported them every day. When she went to a sporting event everyone knew she was there cheering on the team and her children enthusiastically. She was a member of the Democratic Club, Bridge Club, The Jersey Cape Ratchet Club, the women's softball league, the Wildwood bowling league and the list continues on. She moved to Leesburg, Florida with her husband Bill and lived there for 16 years. During that time she became the Treasurer of Tara View, member of the Plantation theatrical group, member of the chorus and Friends in Accord, photographer for all events and competed as well as orchestrated many tennis events at the Plantation. Joan's true passion through out her life was art. She was a professional artist and her paintings reflected her life, which many enjoyed in her gallery showings. Joan was a world traveler and visited places like Egypt, Italy, England and many more. Joan lived life to the fullest every day and loved to laugh and play games with her Family. Joan is joining in heaven her loving Husband William Hughes, her beloved Daughter Sharon Sicilia and Nephew Lee Vilet. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Vilet, Son William Hughes and his wife Kathy, Daughter Evelyn Miley and her Husband John. Son Robert Hughes and his Wife Audrey, Daughter Victoria Graham, Daughter Rhonda Rosamilia and her Husband Salvatore, Son John Hughes and his Wife Lisa, Daughter Colleen White and her Husband Kevin and many Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, one Great Great-Grandchild and nieces. She was the Matriarch of our Family and the best Mother a child could ever be lucky enough to hope for. She will be missed immensely. She would say Laughter is the bottom line and that is the way she lived. We love you Mom. Donations can be made in her honor to any Hospice organization your choice. The viewing will be Thursday night September 4, at Evoys Funeral home from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on September 5 at St. Ann's Catholic Church at 11:00 am followed by the burial at St. Mary's Cemetery.

joan, i would have loved to have met you since knowing your daughter, colleen. she has been and will always be someone to talk and listen to. colleen talks about stories from your past and how much she loved you. you
are as missed by her today, as every day, and youcll be watching over the family and your friends until you meet again in heaven.

I cannot put into words the depth of loss and unbearable pain I feel at the loss of my mother, Joan. There is no one I have ever met I respected more and was proud to know let alone be parented by. I feel her presence with every decision, particularly the most difficult one's . She would always say"Rhonda take the higher road". I am striving hard to continue her life lessons. Again the four letters in the word love seem so inadequate to describe what I feel for my mom.

Christmas decorations, the smell of turkey in the oven, the voice of my mother on that busy day, christmas music filtered through the house and loudness. the house full of family and laughing. the big table set up and dad getting ready to carve the turkey. thats what I remember and missed on thanksgiving.

LAMPS UP IN THE SKY

Lamps up in the sky
Are shining bright for you
And tonight for you
You'll be home.

With the ones
That made a place for you
In the sky for you for you
You must go You must go.

Free of pain
Free to paint now
Your're with our love ones
You're not alone there. I can see that the

Lamps up in the sky
Are shining bright for you
And tongiht for you
You'll be home You are loved You are gone.

Dear Evelyn and Family....
I know how much your mother meant to you. I feel honored to have called her friend and cherish the 7 years that I had known her. I knew her as a fellow resident but got to know her even better as the bass in the quartet we were trying to put together. I'm sure she is one of the best basses in heaven as she was on earth. I truly miss her and her unique sense of humor which only she could share. You are blessed to have her in your family....a remarkable woman.

Always....Karen (lead), Belle Grove resident, and Plantation HOA Administrative Assistant.

one of the greatest women I have ever known. My mother was my friend, traveling companion, my life.
This is the third most painful moment in my life. I haven't gotten over the first two deaths yet, my sister and my father. I love you and will truely, truely miss you mom.
