Catherine Guarino Obituary

GUARINO, CATHERINE, 98 - of Avalon, died on Sunday, September 7, 2008, at the Cape Regional Medical Center. She was born in New York City, the daughter of the late Bartholomew and Bridget Boland Sullivan. A long time resident of Avalon, she has lived with her grandchildren in West Caldwell for the last three years. Mrs. Guarino was a member of the Maris Stella Church here and the Rosary Society. She was a dispatcher for HOW (Help on Wheels) for volunteers to provide transportation for persons having medical appointments, food shopping, etc.; she was a member of the exercise group Sit and Be Fit, and in her early years had worked in New York City for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She was the quintessential girlfriend and the beloved Granny to hundreds. The day of her death was fittingly Grandparent's Day. She is survived by three grandchildren: Thomas M. Morrissey, Jr. (Sharon) of West Caldwell, NJ, Penelope M. McNally (Gregory) of Ramsey, NJ, and Michael J. Morrissey (Francesca) of New Milford, CT; thirteen great-grandchildren; and her son-in-law: Thomas M. Morrissey of Tuxedo Park, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen, in 1988, and her daughter, Madeline Morrissey, in 1991. Funeral Liturgy will be said on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Maris Stella Church, 50th St. and Dune Drive, Avalon, where friends may visit from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House. A Memorial Mass will also be celebrated on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Caldwell. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Sharon, Tom, Greg and family. Jerry and I want to express our deep sympathy on the loss of your Grandmother. Catherine had a wonderfully full life and so loved living on the bay in Avalon. Her legacy will live on in your lives and the lives of her great grandchildren, some of whom had the great opportunity to live with her over the last several years. May God Bless you and your memories sustain you.

Catherine, Granny was a very special person. In the few years that I knew her, she was always a person of great optimism who loved to talk about when she grew up in NYC.

Granny had a great gift of song and she would tell me how everyone used to get around the piano and sing songs. At 98 she remembered not only the main verses of songs, but could recall all of the verses of any song. There was little that she did not remember. We would go through songs of the early 1900's, 20's, 30's and 40's. Catherine knew almost all of them. Sometimes she would bring up old favorites of hers, if I had not played them yet.

Granny always seemed to have a lot of energy as well and would not tire of singing about 30 -40 songs for an hour or more.

I will truly miss the special visits of song that we shared together. My sincere condolences to the entire family. I know that she will be missed by them all, but what wonderful memories they will have as they reminisce her celebration of life. Enid Rothchild

Sharon and Tom, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. How lucky your grandmother was to have grandchildren like you and to live with in her later years!
