Joseph Welsh Obituary

WELSH, JOSEPH J., SR., 75 - of Egg Harbor Township, passed away October 13, 2008, at Shore Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loved ones. Born April 6, 1933, in Philadelphia, he graduated from Northeast Catholic High School for Boys in 1951. Joe found his grea happiness in the family he built with Joan, his bride of 54 years. Together they raised five children and shared a love of friends, music and public service. While he never raced in a shell, one of Joe's passions was rowing. It mixed the love of the water he knew so well from his 26 years in the U.S. Coast Guard with the sportsmanship and beauty of watching a crew pull together toward victory. He spent many spring weekends on the banks of the Schuylkill River watching his sons - and then grandchildren - earn medals for the Holy Spirit and Egg Harbor Township high school crew teams. In addition to his five children, he was a great "Dad" to the four daughters and one son he gained through marriage. He welcomed them into his family with a warmth that made them feel like they had always been part of the Welsh clan. At family gatherings he could be found behind the bar, tending to the drink orders, watching the game, while sharing stories - and insights - with his boys. Joe loved history and could tell you not only what something was, but why. The retired Chief Warrant Officer fourth class started a new career in the late 1980s as superintendent of Public Works in Margate. After retiring in 1999, Joe maintained his ties to the shore town as a member of Blessed Sacrament Church's choir. His interest in his community and politics kept him active as a member of Egg Harbor Township's Environmental Board, Municipal Utilities Authority, Veterans Board, United Republican Club and county Republican Committee. He was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America, and never forgot his Irish roots as a member and past president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Joe is predeceased by his parents, two brothers and his grandson, John O'Donnell Jr., the family's little angel. He is survived by his wife, Joan. His children: Raymond (Ellen) Welsh Sr., Judith (John) O'Donnell, Joseph (Theresa) Welsh Jr., John (Robin) Welsh and Daniel (Lynda) Welsh. His grandchildren: Raymond (Jennifer) Welsh Jr.; Joseph (Shannon) Welsh; Jessica (Kenneth) Souder; Eileen (Derek) Brown, Jane, Laurie, Bethanne and Joanna O'Donnell; and Andrew, Joseph III, Olivia, Patrick, Timothy, Erin and Brady Welsh. Great-grandchildren: Kelley, Thomas, Kenneth Jr. and Darcy. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday 11am at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Margate, viewing will be held from 9:30am till time of Mass, in the Church. Burial, Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing. Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Scholarship Fund c/o Patty Ferry 613 N. Suffolk Ave., Ventnor, NJ 08406

Joe was a wonderful person. Remember him from our days working together at Bally's Park Place in the stooreroom when I was a young kid who was just starting to learn the F&B business, and Joe showed me the ropes. Many a days Joe would tell us all stories of his time at Sea. He loved talking about his maritime stuff. Sorry to hear about his passsing, my thoughts are with his family.

To the Welsh Family,
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well-lived. I am sure that as proud as you were of your Dad, he was tenfold as proud of his children. Leaders, role models and great friends.

Daniel & Family:

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your father/husband.

Dan,

I remember watching Game 6 of the 1993 World Series with your mom and dad. Your dad always wondered why Fregosi took out Roger Mason.

May the Lord comfort you in your time of loss.

Time endears and cannot fade memories that love has made.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,

And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell,

When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crossed the bar.
