Anna Diggs Obituary

Mrs. Anna M. Diggs, 79, of 1815 W. Clara Drive, Petersburg, Va., was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell, Va.

She was born to the late John and Annie Hardy on May 31, 1929. She attended and graduated from Peabody High School (now Peabody Middle School) and Virginia State College (now Virginia State University), Class of 1945. A retired elementary school teacher, Mrs. Diggs taught the children of Dinwiddie County for 30 years. She was a life-long member of Gillfield Baptist Church, an avid reader who enjoyed working crossword puzzles and a lover of gospel music.

Mrs. Diggs was preceded in death by two endearing husbands, Walter McCray Jr. and Glenville Digg;s and a brother, John Hardy.

She is survived by two sons, Walter III and Kevin McCray; a brother, Ramon Hardy, all of Petersburg, Va.; two nieces, Cheryl Stith (Fred) of Petersburg, Va., and Vera Barley of Richmond, Va.; two nephews, Ramon Hardy Jr. (Karen) of Richmond, Va., and Michael Hardy (Patsy) of Houston; two granddaughters, Shamara Robinson of Petersburg, Va., and Shantita Prosise (Terry) of Chesterfield County, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Kiersten Robinson of Petersburg, Va., and Taylor and Terry Prosise Jr. of Chesterfield County, Va.; a devoted goddaughter, Carolene Lewis (Bruce) of Richmond, Va.; a host of life-long friends, to include Kate Stinson (Bill), Ethel Bellamy, Mary Wyche and Sue Richardson, all of Petersburg, Va., Lottie Brown of Ettrick, Va., and Paula Smith-Adams (Rodney) of Fairfax, Va.

A homegoing celebration will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Gillfield Baptist Church, 209 Perry St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Dr. George W.C. Lyons Jr., pastor, officiating. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.

Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Family members will assemble at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral establishment the day of the services.

I am really sorry to hear that Mrs. Diggs passed. Mrs. Diggs was my fifth grade teacher. She was a very kind and generous person. Mrs. Diggs will be truly missed. My prayers go out to the family.

Mrs. Diggs will be sorely missed. She raised so many of us that grew up in Cool Springs. My heart has a void tha will never be filled. Rosalyn and Natalie and the rest of her family, May God be with you.
