Robert Carter Obituary

RET CSM Robert (Bob) Carter Sr. of Petersburg passed away on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008.

He served 30 years in the U.S. Army as a dedicated soldier and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.

His service in the Army was followed by some years at ICI Americas. He was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post No. 284, and the Hopewell Moose.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Liz Carter.

He leaves behind seven children who will cherish the lifetime of memories and love shared between them all, from daughter No. 1 through daughter No. 6 with one son in between: Mary Freitas (Joseph) of California, Ruby Hoover (Larry) of Texas, Bobby Carter (Doris) of Arizona, Rosie Williams (J.T.) of Enon, Cindy Payne (John) of Suffolk, Becky Welsh (Bob) of Matoaca, and Gloria Carter of Petersburg.

He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, Trudy Williams, Holly Brown (Josh), Jen Knight (Sean), Liz Venning (Josh), Mimi Brazil (Mikey), Martha Welsh, Patrick Payne, Heidi Moreno (Eric), Jesse Hoover, Tanya Freitas, Kathy Welsh, Betsy Hoover, and Brianna Carter; two great-grandchildren, Haylie Brown and Isaiah Freitas; two sisters, Florence White, Mae Harrel; and a brother, Herbert Carter Jr.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 at Bermuda Memorial Park, Enon with full military honors with the Rev. Dr. Randall Hahn officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (tonight) at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make donations to the Army Emergency Relief (AER) National Headquarters, 200 Stovall St., Alexandria, VA 22332 or another charity of your choice.
