Sarah Megargee Obituary

Sarah Wells Megargee of Neavitt, Md., died at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at the age of 82.

She was born in New York City on Dec. 28, 1926, the eldest child of Marshall Swain Wells and Dixie Love Wells. When she was a small child, they returned to their home in Charlottesville, Va. After graduating from Lane High School, she went to work in her Uncle C.C. Wells' New Dominion Bookshop while he served in the ambulance corps in Europe during World War II.

She met her husband, the late Henry Preaut Megargee Jr., while he was attending the University of Virginia Law School. They married in 1949 and moved to southern New Jersey and raised their children in Brigantine. In 1981 she and her husband retired to Neavitt, Md. and lived there for the rest of their lives.

She is survived by her children, Amanda Megargee Sutton of Petersburg, Va., Moira Marshall Megargee of South Deerfield, Mass., and Brian Douglas Megargee and his wife, Mary Quercia Megargee of Kennedyville, Md.; and her beloved grandchildren, James Marshall Megargee Sutton and Paige Buchanan Megargee. She is also survived by her four siblings, Alice Wells Kinter of Chevy Chase, Md., Richard S. Wells of Columbia, S.C., Samuel B. Wells of Charlottesville, Va., and Courtney Wells Sugerman of Charlottesville, Va.

In St. Michaels, Md., she was a longtime volunteer of the St. Michaels Library, was very active in Christ Church, and a member of the St. Andrews Society. She and her husband participated in the Waterfowl Festival for more than 20 years.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m., at Christ Church, St. Michaels, corner of Talbot and Willow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the St. Michaels Branch of the Talbot County Free Library.
