Dorothy Hunter Obituary
Dorothy Virginia Hunter was born in Portsmouth, Va., on Sept. 8, 1925, to the late William and Maryann Gray.
The family moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was raised in Brownsville with her brother, William (Bucky) who she was very close to.
In 1942, she met the love of her life William Hunter (Boot). On July 21, 1946, they united in marriage and were blessed with six children.
As a young adult, she accepted Jehovah God and began her journey serving the Lord with Joy. She was a dedicated member of the Cypress Hills congregation until she relocated to Columbia, S.C., where her health began to decline.
Nana was a dedicated Mother and Grandmother and an inspiration to all she came in contact with. She will be greatly missed.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, William of 31 years; Beatrice Hunter (stepdaughter); and Jean Cummings (daughter).
Mourning her loss, yet rejoicing in Heaven's gain are her precious five children, Mary Brown (Levan) of Long Island, N.Y., Patricia Daves (Ralph) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Nora Mouzon (Al) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Wanda Jones (Chauncey) of Petersburg, Va., Charles Hunter (Almetta) of Long Island, David Cummings (son-in-law) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren, Nicole Daniels of Queens, N.Y., Phyllis Doby (Eric) of Hopewell, Va., Alesha Conner (Mitch) of Columbia, S.C., Keely Burkett (Jeffrey) of Hopewell, Va., Charles Hunter of Brooklyn, N.Y., Monique Pankey (Brent) of New Jersey, Chauncey Jones (Zelika) of Petersburg, Va., David Cummings of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kisha Hunter of Richmond, Va., Jabar Hunter of Bronx, N.Y., Franshea Neal (David) of Richmond, Va., Charles Brown of Queens, N.Y., Kendra Brown of Schenetady, N.Y., Jarius Brown of Queens, N.Y., Kimeyasha and Kayrinah Hunter of Long Island, N.Y.; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one niece, Georganna Marcus (Charles) of Richmond, Va.; one nephew, Carl Hunter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, devoted friends, Beverly Johnson, Elaine Mac; and adopted son, Joseph Hassan.
A homegoing celebration was held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Grace Funeral Chapel, Brooklyn, N.Y. Interment was held on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
