John Dooley Obituary

DOOLEY, JOHN J. 'JACK', 86, a long time resident of Cranston, passed away peacefully on December 5th at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Providence a son of the late Leo P. and Marion V. (Kenneally) Dooley.

He served in the 1st Marine Division during WWII and landed in the first wave at Pelilu as a squad leader, receiving both battle citations and the Purple Heart. He recovered from his wounds in time to take part in the successful battle for Okinawa.

John worked in the construction industry for more than fifty years, taking part in the erection of many landmark buildings throughout the state. He played football with the Swan Club in Providence and boxed as a heavy weight at the Rhode Island Auditorium in Providence after WWII. He was the oldest living member of the Providence YMCA.

Lou Gorman, former general manager of the Boston Red Sox and outstanding quarterback for the Swan Club, once described Red as 'the greatest football player in the state.' He was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan; Jack was a member of the Pawtuxet Athletic Club.

Jack leaves three brothers, William J. Dooley of Warwick, Leo P. Dooley of Lincoln and Kenneth R. Dooley of Sarasota, Fl., and many devoted nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Eileen F. Drottz, Margaret Malone, Lawrence and Paul Dooley.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9am from BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Rd., Lincoln, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jude Church Front St., Lincoln at 10am. Burial with Military Honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited and may call MONDAY 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be appreciated. We will miss seeing uncle Jack during his trips here in California. Our best memories are sitting by the pool talking stories. There are still so many questions left unanswered. We love you Uncle Jack and will miss you dearly.

Our deepest smpathy to the Dooley family on your great loss.

Red was a good man - the highest compliment we choose to pay to those whom we admire for devoting an entire lifetime to family and friends.

Not nearly as important an attribute - but one Red had anyway - was that he also was one cool guy!

So those things in your respetive memory books that make you cry today will again bring smiles to your faces...when somewhere down the road you can give in to those memories without tears, allow them to wash over you, think about how lucky you were to have had Red in your lives - and then smile the smile with which he would want you to remember him.

Godspeed Red!

The PAC won't be the same without Red Dooley......

Belly up to the bar, boys!!!
