Born in the Hazleton Hospital, he was a son of the late M. Claudia (Gibbon) and James R. Brokenshire Sr.
He was also predeceased by his brother, Laury Samuel.
He grew up in East Mauch Chunk until the age of nine when his family moved to Reading.
He was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School, class of 1950.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Shirley (Miller) Brokenshire, Middletown, with whom he recently celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage.
Also surviving are a daughter, Susan Brokenshire-Prater, Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Beth Brokenshire, Enola; a son, James R. Brokenshire III, Port Matilda; seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild and a sister, Diane Brokenshire, New Cumberland.
Colonel Brokenshire was a United States Military Academy graduate, class of 1955. He had more than 24 years of active duty service at installations in the United States and overseas, including Fort Knox, Ky.; Fort Leavenworth, Kans.; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Korea, Vietnam and Santiago, Chile.
After military retirement, James devoted more than 20 years to municipal management in the Harrisburg area. He also became an advocate for veterans by volunteering with various military organizations and associations.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. in Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Route 422 and Lucy Avenue, Hershey. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial with honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon VA Hospital, c/o Dept. of Hematology and Oncology, 1700 S. Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, PA 17042. Share condolences with the family at www.hooverfuneralhome.com.

COL Brokenshire was an excellent officer, a tireless advocate for veterans and a true gentleman. He will be missed by everyone who knew him or worked with him. Our prayers are with his family.

I had the pleasure of delivering mail to Mr Brokenshire for many years. He always came out to the mail box with a smile and a cheery greeting. I always teased him about when his next game of golf would be. He told me that he didnt play on weekends, he let that for the people that were not retired.......Always enjoy the big golf course in the sky.. I will miss you.. B Lohman
