John Orfanos Obituary

Middletown, NY

John Orfanos, Johnny "O", of Middletown, died suddenly on Monday, July 14, 2008 at O.R.M.C., Horton Campus in Middletown. He was 61 years old.

John was born in Athens, Greece on March 27, 1947, the son of the late Sofia and Konstantinos Orfanos of Athens, Greece.

John came to the United States in 1966 on a Greek Merchant Marine Ship. He took a chance with just a few dollars in his pocket and a couple layers of clothes and the aspiration to live the American Dream. And that he did! John was a self-employed plumber for 35 years.

He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Wallkill Lodge #627 and a 32nd degree Mason. John was a member of both the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Newburgh.

A family statement reads, "John was a loving and devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend who always provided a loving, caring, and supportive home to all his family and friends. He always wanted everyone to be happy and was loved by everyone who had the opportunity to meet him! John loved vacationing with his wife and spending time with his five beloved grandchildren!"

John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Orfanos of Middletown; his three children: Dino Orfanos and his wife, Lucy of Middletown, Sofia Rodrigues and her husband, Jose of Pine Bush, and Kleo Tripodianos and her husband, Thomas of Middletown; five grandchildren: Joaquim and Ioannis Orfanos Rodrigues of Pine Bush, Angeliki and Stelios Tripodianos and Evanthia Maria Orfanos, all of Middletown; his sisters, Eleni Orfanos of Athens, Greece and Keti Viannitakis and her husband, Mihali of Crete, Greece; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews in the United States and Greece.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 18, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY. A Masonic Service will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Trisagion will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday evening. Fr. Chris Talleos will officiate.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, Goshen Turnpike, Middletown, NY. Burial will follow in Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to either the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 2250 Goshen Tpke, Middletown, NY 10940 or St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 2004, Newburgh, NY 12550.

To Dino, Lucy and family,

Jesus says in the New Testament that we can truly know a tree by the fruit it brings forth. Your dad was a wonderful, charming and such generous person that we are so grateful for, and he also brought forth a beautiful family that we are so fortunate to have become a part of. You are in our hearts deeply and now that you too are blessed to be a father, the love your dad continually poured upon his family will now continue to flow stronger than ever as every day it waters the fruitful, loving tree you have become for your own wife and beautiful child.

With much gratitude and love,

Barbara Herbert

Friends are people you choose in life's journey. Our family's journey would not be complete without John and his family. We spent many holidays together learning from each other and enjoying each others families. I have seen Kleo, Dino and Sofia grow from kids to adulthood and having children of there own. The love of family and friends was a beautiful thing to see. We will miss John's wonderful smile and very kind words. God bless you and let God shine his light on all of you at this very difficult time. We will always be here for you.
Our love
Lucy, Larry, Nancy, and Sean Fox

When other people would have claim they were too busy to make the time, you always made sure you did attend your children's important school and sporting events.
You always put others happiness as a priority because that made you happy.
While others complained about work, you enjoyed it.
You are always surround by the love of mom, your children, and your grandchildren.
You were not a "millionaire", but you did live a blessed and rich life because of these qualities.
You will be missed so much for your loving smile and the funny faces you make.
Love,
your son Dino, daughter in law Lucy and your granddaughter Evanthia Maria.
