Otto Bayer Obituary

Port Jervis, NY

Mr. Otto Charles Bayer of Port Jervis, NY passed away Monday, July 14, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 88.

He was born September 25, 1919 in Wilkes Barre, PA the son of the late Charles Otto and the late Helen Nealon Bayer. Otto was married to the late Agnes McGoey Bayer until she passed away on April 6, 1998.

He was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Port Jervis and a past member of the Knights of Columbus in Port Jervis.

He proudly served as a U.S. Army Ranger in the 2nd Battalion during World War II where he received the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his participation in the storming of the beaches of Normandy.

A family statement read: "Otto Bayer was a wonderful, loyal and dedicated father, grandfather, and friend, who devoted his entire life to his family. He was an active member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Port Jervis since the family's arrival in 1961. Dad worked for over 50 years as a salesman for Scranton Tobacco and Mountain Candy Company, rarely missing a day. Even in his retirement, he worked for many years as a school crossing guard at the intersection of Hamilton St. and Kingston Ave. for the City of Port Jervis. Living through the Depression, he helped support his eight brothers and sisters. Dad joined the service to defend his country in World War II and was a proud member of the 2nd Ranger Battalion. He partook in the invasion of Normandy with his unit, scaling the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc with the Rangers. Dad was an avid Mets fan and was the family photographer. He mastered the Internet, and kept family connected over recent years. He has touched the lives of many and will live in all of our hearts forever. Dad and Grandpa, you will always be our Hero and role model. We love you and will miss you always."

Survivors include sons, Charles Bayer and his wife Tracy of Medina, OH, Thomas Bayer and his wife Donna of Round Rock, TX and Dennis Bayer and his wife Jill of Bradenton, FL; daughters, Sheila Moore and her husband Barry of Howells, NY and Mary Lou Gagnon of Middletown, NY; nine grandchildren: Sean, Erin, Julie, Meghan, Emily, Brianna, Danny, Molly and Carly; four great grandchildren: Elise, Jayden, Alaya and Josslyn; also several nieces and nephews.

To the Bayer Family,
Cindy and I had the pleasure of living across the steet from your mom and dad for a few years before moving to California in 1980. I remember how excited they would get when the " kids" were coming home for a visit. You were all so blessed to have had such wonderful, loving parents. Cindy and I have all of you close in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

I first knew Otto when we lived on Cross St. in PJ. He was a warm, outgoing individual, very proud of his family ,and like many of his generation ,gave his all when our country was threatened. It was my privelege to know him and I mourn his passing.

I knew your Mom and Dad from summers at Mt. Haven resort. They were so much fun and were so kind to my children. It was at a difficult time when I had just moved to Pike County and missed our former home. Agnes and Otto were great to be with. I am sure that they will be greatly missed by all your family. My condolences to everyone.
