Caroline Hopkins Obituary

Washingtonville, NY

Caroline Mary Hopkins, a native-born Washingtonville resident, died at The Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh on July 17, 2008. She was 86.

The daughter of John Scanlon and Carrie Williams, she was born on April 8, 1922.

Mrs. Hopkins was a retired secretary to the principal of the Taft Elementary School in Washingtonville. She was also organist and choir director of the Presbyterian Church in Washingtonville for over 20 years and was well known in the area as a pianist. For many years she played at the Orange County Nursing Home for the enjoyment of the patients and staff. She was a long-standing member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Presbyterian Women's Association and, more recently, in the Wednesday morning Bible study group.

Mrs. Hopkins was known in the community for her many acts of kindness, often taking homemade soup or pudding to the ill and giving cookies to neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger M. Hopkins, as well as three brothers, John Walter, Joe and Wilbur. She is survived by one son, John R. and daughter-in-law, Elly of Pinellas Park, FL and Elgin, IL; one grandson, Alexander of Woodinville, WA and one great-grandson, Matthew, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 27 at 3 p.m. Internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Washingtonville, 30 Goshen Ave., Washingtonville, NY 10992 or to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Arrangements are under the care of Thomas A. Murray of the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home; 845-496-9106.

I knew Caroline (and Roger) from our work together at Washingtonville CSD. Caroline was my "go to" person when I needed information or guidance about work. She was a no nonsense gal with a great sense of humor and I always enjoyed our chats. Together, she and Gaylord Dunn represented the best of Taft Elementary while my children attended there. I am sorry for your loss and the loss of a great lady in our community.
