Adolph "Duffy" Berg

Adolph Berg Obituary

Freeport, NY

Adolph "Duffy" Berg passed on to his heavenly home Sunday, August 31, 2008. He was 86.

He was born in Dallas, WI, the eighth of ten children, at his parents' homestead and dairy farm, on November 3, 1921 to the late Olaus and Anna Berg.

Duffy had designs on agricultural college, but was swept away by World War II. During military service in the U.S. Army, he happened through Freeport, NY's USO where he happened to dance with a lovely damsel, Charlotte Marie Roberts, a Freeport native. They carried on a three and one half year correspondence while he served in Burma as an airplane mechanic. They were married January 13, 1946 and happened to celebrate 58 wedding anniversaries, happily, lovingly, together until her death in October 2004. Duffy was a songbird of his Lord, Jesus. He was always seen with his guitar, a little story he'd pull from his shirt pocket and a smile on his face. The twinkle in his eyes lit up the very center of your heart. Duffy came to be a beloved member of his adopted Freeport community, seen constantly at Christ Lutheran Church where he was a member of the choir, greeter-extraordinaire, and an all-around A#1 volunteer. He treated the church building like his own home and was indeed very at-home there. He and his wife were hosts to dozens of travelers and boarders over the years and sent these fine people to all parts of the globe. He was employed as an HV-AC repairman by Roxen Co. for 41 years. One of his favorite sayings was, "Chose a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life", and we can attest that he lived that, too.

When he retired, Duffy turned his attention to the veterans of the community at the American Legion. He spent a time as the chaplain of Chapter 324 and greatly enjoyed marching in the parades, as well as visiting in numerous situations and honoring veterans at the time of their passing.

He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his beloved sons, Dennis Berg and wife Joan, of Central Valley, NY and Barry Berg of Freeport, NY; grandson, Matthew Berg of White Plains, NY, and grandson, Christopher Berg and wife, Karen, along with his two, sweet great-grandsons, Noah and Eric of Dover, NH, who brightened his later years. Two of his dear sisters, Signe Halverson and husband, Donald, of Dallas, WI, and Ruth Davidson of Mankato, MN, many loving nieces and nephews and their children survive him.

His family wishes to honor each of his friends, who always treated him like family, and to thank them for their kind support and prayers after Duffy's recent hip fracture.

Visitation will be on Friday, September 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Hungerford and Clark Funeral Home, Freeport, NY.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 6, 10 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Freeport, NY.

Interment will be Monday, September 8, at Calverton Nation Cemetery for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH, 45250-0301, Attn: Gift Processing or Christ Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 6, Freeport, NY 11520.

Arrangements were made by Hungerford and Clark, 110 Pine Street, Freeport, NY 11520.

Surely Duffy is now singing with the angel choir! He was the dearest Christian man that we have ever known, a man who truly lived his faith. We are happy to have known him and the world is a little darker for us without him.
