Phillip Stoekel Obituary

May 22, 1933 - October 3, 2008

New Windsor, NY

Phillip "PePa" Stoekel, former proprietor of Phil's Sunoco on Lake St. in Newburgh and a longtime resident of New Windsor, entered into rest on Friday, October 3, 2008 in Newburgh. He was 75.

Son of the late Phillip and Elizabeth Brandt Stoekel, he was born May 22, 1933 in Yugoslavia.

Phil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, earning the Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United National Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of VFW in Newburgh and Germania in Poughkeepsie.

Phil was a very proud, outgoing and caring gentleman, with great love and devotion for his family and friends. He loved traveling many places all over this beautiful country in his RV, auto racing and going to the diner for his morning coffee. One of dad's favorite sayings was, "Who would ever believe that in one man's lifetime you would go from driving horse and wagon in Austria, to driving automobiles and trucks, to witnessing man land on the moon." Dad thoroughly enjoyed his 20 years of retirement and always said, "It can't get any better." He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife and best friend of 52 years, Helga, at home; his loving daughter, Betty A. Kestler and her husband, Richard of New Windsor; loving son, Robert P. Stoekel of Port Orange, FL; his brother, Jacob Stoekel and his wife, Eleanor of Thornwood, NY; six grandchildren: Phillip Enright and his wife, Christine of Newburgh, Michael Enright of New Windsor, Kyle and Cory Stoekel of Port Orange, FL, Michelle Taylor and her husband, Mike of Newburgh, and David Kestler of Montgomery; two great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Kestler and John Taylor; one niece; and three nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Monday, October 6 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 7 in the funeral home, with Father Frank Bassett officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Francis Cemetery, New Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions on Phil's behalf may be sent to American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; or, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Attn: Gift Processing, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Wealth can be defined in several ways. I like to define a wealthy man as one who has many friends and positively impacts people. My uncle Phil was a wealthy man. I'm going to miss him. Good job, Uncle Phil, for a life well lived.
