Francis Butler Obituary
Poughkeepsie, NY
Francis "Blackie" Butler, 80, of Poughkeepsie, died October 26, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
He had been employed by H.O. Penn for 38 years and was a general foreman, retiring in 1990. He also served in the U.S. Navy.
A lifetime local resident, he was a member of Pirate Canoe Club, Mid-Hudson Model A and Restorer Club and Shamrock Club. He was a well-known car restorer.
He was an avid Model A car lover, diesel mechanic, and heavy operators engineer, Local Union 15.
He was recently recognized by Bill Ford (grandson of Henry Ford) for achievement and dedication to Model A restoration.
He was also an avid reader and, as a child, was recognized by Adriance Library for reading every book in the children's library.
Born March 8, 1928 in Poughkeepsie, NY, he was the son of David and Helen Lynch Butler.
On November 20, 1954 at St. Joachim Church in Beacon, NY, he married Helen McDowell, she survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael Butler and wife, Leslie of Poughkeepsie; son, Patrick Butler of Poughkeepsie; daughter, Peggy Butler Hollister and companion, Robert Valle of Hyde Park; grandchildren: Katie Butler, Michael Butler, II, Patrick Butler, Jr., Giorgina Butler, and Amanda Butler Hollister; step-grandchidren, Nicole Alston and Amy Alston; sister, Irene Miller of Poughkeepsie; brother, David Butler and wife, Judie of New Paltz and sisters, Rhonda and husband, John Gruner of Poughkeepsie and Judy DuBois and husband, Louis of Highland, NY, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his aunt, Ruth McBrian and a Goddaughter, Melanie Miller McLaughlin.
Calling hours were held October 29, at the Joseph J. Darrow, Sr. Funeral Home, Inc., Rt. 9, Hyde Park, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
Funeral mass will be held today, Thursday, October 30, at 10 a.m. at the Lady of The Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Church, 185 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie, with Rev. James Garisto officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
Arrangements under the direction of Joseph J. Darrow, Sr. Funeral Home, Inc., Rt. 9, Hyde Park.
