Dr. Manpel was a general surgeon who practiced medicine for 30 years. Upon completion of his surgical residency in New York City, he opened a practice there and in addition served as a Medial Examiner for the City of New York.

In 1972, he and his family moved to Cornwall, NY where he practiced at Cornwall and St. Luke's Hospitals for 20 years. He served as Chief of Surgery and later as Medical Director at Arden Hill Hospital.

In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Manpel was an active member of the community serving as President of the Board of the Museum of the Hudson Highlands for many years.

As a young man, after immigrating to the United States with his parents, he enlisted in the armed forces of the United States. He served with the 29th Infantry Division of the United States Army and was part of the U.S. military and allied forces that landed in Normandy on D-Day, specifically on Omaha Beach. He received EAMET Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars with 1 arrowhead. Upon his discharge from the military, he attended the City College of New York and University of Lausanne, Switzerland Medical School where he met his wife of 54 years.

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Dr Manpel. I knew of him as the father of Eric, a significant High School friend who helped me find my way. Thankyou Eric. I always admired Dr Manpel's Ernest Hemmingway looks and his chic Swiss Chalet in Cornwall. It was through him (and you Eric) that I learned about quiche and fondue...an intro to the finer things in life) He was also a dear friend of my mom and dad who tell me that he threw a good party... Marceline, Eric and Dominique, my deepest condolences. May you find solace in knowing that Jack was dearly loved and remembered my so many.
