Velia Mayer Obituary

Washingtonville - Velia Teresa Mayer, a resident of the area for 67 years died on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at St. Luke's Hospital in New York with her family by her side. She was 96 years old.

The daughter of Raffaele Parmegiani & Anita Finati, she was born on June 2, 1911 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She was the widow of William O. Mayer. Raised in Brooklyn, she and her husband fulfilled their dream of buying a farm in 1940 with a move from the city to Blooming Grove. There she developed a life-long passion for organic gardening, natural healing and fitness. She grew the best tasting tomatoes and had a remedy for every ailment. She loved to travel and had visited Europe, Asia and South America. She was active in the local senior clubs, had been a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and regularly participated in the Senior Olympics. She loved to sing, dance and dress up for costume parties. She shared her love of life and her sense of humor with those around her to her last days.

Survivors include her son, William and his wife, Elissaveta Iordanova-Mayer; daughter, Johanna Mayer; sisters Wanda Faria & Mary Ferrazzano; grandchildren Benjamin Mayer & Iva Iordanova. She was predeceased by her brothers Reno, Romo, Leo, and Oscar Parmegiani; and one sister Linda Cavallaro.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 11 a.m. with a memorial service to immediately follow at 12 p.m. at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home 20 N.Street, Washingtonville. Cremation was private.

My husband and I would like to express our sympathy in the loss of your Mother. My husbands grandfather Reno and Velia were brother and sister as you know, and we had the pleasure of seeing your Mother at functions for Ralph & Gwen. She was such a sweet woman.
