Charles Herring Obituary

Newburgh - Charles L. Herring Jr., 69, passed on Friday, November 23, 2007 at home, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He will join his son, Charles L. Herring III in eternal rest.

Charles is the son of the late Muriel (Walsh) and Charles (Chick) Herring Sr.

A lifelong Newburgh resident, he was born on December 1, 1937. He was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. He was in the boys choir in his youth.

He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy (Class of 1956) and Orange County Community College. He proudly served in the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. In his younger years, he was a member of the Winona Lake Fire Company and Town of Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He retired from IBM after 29 years of service. He worked on the Class of 1956 50th reunion and enjoyed renewed friendships. He was proud of his Charter Membership in the Winona Lake Fire Engine Company #2, which his father helped to establish.

Charles was a gentle man who will be remembered for his quiet ways and dry sense of humor. He lived for his family and enjoyed his daily walks with his faithful canine companions Mac Rusty.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Lorraine and his beloved son, Eric; brother, William and his wife Linda of Newburgh; loving aunts, Dolores Gerbes of New Windsor and Dimmie Patsalos of Atlanta, Ga.; sister-in-law, Jean Herring; nieces, Kimberly (Herring) and James Ludvick of Newburgh, Holly (Herring) and Tucker Brendt of San Diego, Calif. and Lynn Herring of Newburgh; great-nieces and great-nephews, James, Justin, Jillian, Joseph and Jaden Ludvick and Issiah and Michael Figueroa; and many wonderful cousins, friends and relatives.

He was predeceased by his parents, Muriel and Charles (Chick) Herring Sr. and his son, Charles L. Herring III; aunts, Shirley Driscoll, Ruth Walsh; and uncle, William Walsh.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, November 26 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27 at St. George's Episcopal Church, Newburgh. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh.

Dear Lorraine,
It is with great sorrow that I write this note of consolation to you. Bob and I extend our deepest sympathy. Our personal telephone conversation a few months ago confirmed your fears that Charlie was soon to leave you. I pray you will get some much needed rest now you know he is at peace and with his loved ones.
Although our get-togethers were restricted by distance and to family events I will remember that Charlie's eyes would sparkle when he issued his quiet smile.
I know you are strong and resilient and I will pray for you and your son over the next days and months to come. Your memories of your long marriage will sustain you. Please call whenever you feel you need to - I am a good listener. Thank you for being my friend and my cousin.
Love, Diane
