Roland Brandt Obituary

Jekyll Island, Ga. - Colonel Roland Alfred Brandt, 88, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2007 at his residence on Jekyll Island, Ga.

A native of Marenisco, Mich., he was the son of Christian Axel Theodore Peterson Brandt and Mary Ellen Hall Brandt, but had lived in Glynn County since the 1970's. Roland was baptized in the Holy Roman Catholic Church in Duluth, Minn. He was a 1936 graduate of Central High School in Superior, Wisc.

Mr. Brandt entered the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. in July 1940. He graduated from the United States Military Academy on June 1, 1943. He was a WW II U.S. Army Veteran where he fought in the Southwest Pacific. He and his battalion participated in some thirteen-assault landings before they were reorganized as a construction battalion in the Philippine Islands. A Korean War Veteran, in June 1950, Roland returned into battle after the North Koreans attacked and Roland with the rest of the 7th Division fought in South and North Korea. In 1952, Roland enrolled in the Fifth year of Professional Engineering at North Carolina State College of Engineering and Agriculture in Raleigh, N.C. where he graduated with a degree of Civil Engineer. After graduation, Roland took the state examination and became a Registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he returned from Vietnam in late 1966 and attended the British Imperial Defense College in London. In early 1971, Roland was offered a two-year fellowship at the School of Public Health, University of N.C., Chapel Hill. In June 1973, Roland graduated with a degree of Master of Science in Environmental Engineering. After graduation Roland accepted the position of Region Manager, Environmental Protection Division, State of Georgia where he retired in 1984. Roland was also an instrument rated pilot. Roland was active in community affairs. He was President of the Jekyll Island Lions Club, President of the Jekyll Island Rotary Club and was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He liked to construct things. One of his proudest moments was when he finished a plane in August 1998 after 5 years of construction. His loving wife Janet Duncan Brandt preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters: Carol Brandt of Cleveland, Ga., and Debbie Huvard of Richard, Va.; four grandsons: Taylor and Duncan Brett of Cleveland, Ga., Jeremy and Patrick Huvard of Richmond, Va.; one granddaughter, Anna-Claire Brett of Cleveland, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 30, at the West Point Old Cadet Chapel in West Point N.Y. Burial will be at the USMA Cemetery in West Point, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Brunswick.
