Alfred Berkery Obituary

New Windsor - Alfred A. Berkery, a life long resident of the area died on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at home. He was 79 years old.

Born in Newburgh on February 28, 1928, he was the son of the late Albert and Mary Anna DeLancy Berkery.

Al was a graduate of NFA Class of 1946, and proudly served in the US Army during the army occupation of Japan. For many years he worked as a pressman for the Newburgh News and Poughkeepsie Journal. While semi-retired, he was a custodian for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Al always enjoyed playing the drums and singing, both at social gatherings and for various senior groups. He was considered a loyal and supportive friend to many. He also enjoyed weekends of bird watching, photography, spending time down at the Newburgh waterfront, and at Kowawase Park in New Windsor.

He is survived by his loving children: Michael Berkery and his wife, Karen, of Whittier, Calif., Mark Berkery and his wife, Marie, of New Windsor, Andrew Berkery of Gardiner, Kathleen Rowley of Newburgh, and Michelle Jennings and her husband, Jeff, of Cheraw, S.C.; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, Grace. His grandson, Mark William Rowley, predeceased him.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, December 3 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh, NY 12550. A funeral service will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date at the convenience of the family.

He was a very quite class mate that was always heard without raising his voice. I admired his inner strength. To the family I am very sorry. It is very hard to put in words the great feeling we all had for your dad.
