Cecile Marquis Obituary

Newburgh - Sister Cecile Marquis (formerly Sister Mary of the Holy Ghost) died Monday, December 3, 2007. Born in Salem, Mass. on December 12, 1911, she was the daughter of Joseph and Marie Lumina Symphorose Marquis of St. Louis du Ha Ha, Canada. Both her parents and her sister, Irene Chalifoux predeceased her.

She is survived by two nieces, Pauline Williams of Arizona and Theresa Prijatel of California, and several cousins.

Sister entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Saint Dominic, 37 Park Street, Fall River, Mass. on November 1, 1931, and made her Final Profession on July 7, 1937.

She was an elementary school teacher of the lower grades for most of her life, in the schools of Fall River, Plattsburg and Acushnet, until she retired doing limited services at Saint Catherine's Community, Fall River. In 1995, when the Congregation became part of the Sisters of Hope, sister moved to the Residential Care Community in Newburgh, N.Y. She will be buried in the Sisters of Hope Cemetery in Newburgh, N.Y.

Sister was well known for her kindness and patience, especially to those with difficulties of many types. She was neat and well organized, had a very happy disposition and beautiful smile.

Viewing will take place at the Dominican Sisters of Hope Chapel in Newburgh on Wednesday, December 5, from 2 p.m., with a Wake Service at 6 p.m., and on Thursday morning, December 6, from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. This will be followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by the Rev. Frank Bassett of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.
