Catherine Murtha Obituary

New Windsor, NY

Sr. Catherine Murtha (the former Sr. Mary Damien), died on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Mount Saint Joseph Convent. Born in New Rochelle, NY, Sr. Catherine was 93 years of age.

Sr. Catherine entered the Sisters of the Presentation in New Windsor, NY in 1936 and served as a teacher and administrator in the Archdiocese of New York.

Sr. Catherine taught in St. Frances of Rome School in the Bronx from 1939 to 1949, in the former St. John's High School in Goshen, NY from 1949 to 1961. Sr. served as the principal of St. John and Mary School in Chappaqua, St. John Elementary School in Goshen, and St. Frances of Rome Elementary School in the Bronx. In addition, Sr. Catherine taught history as an adjunct professor at Manhattan College in the Bronx and Presentation Junior College in Newburgh, NY.

Sr. Catherine retired from community service in 2004 and lived at the Retirement Center at Mount Saint Joseph.

The wake for Sr. Catherine is today, Monday, January 12, from 3-5 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection is on Tuesday, January 13, at 10 a.m. The wake and funeral liturgy will take place at Mount Saint Joseph Convent in New Windsor.

Sr. Catherine is survived by her niece, Barbara Bernard from East Sandwich, MA and grand nieces.

Sister Mary Damien was my first grade teacher at St. Francis of Rome school. She is still part of my memory of first grade, and the first teacher I ever had. May she rest in peace. Elearnor (Walters) Guerriero
