William Wight Obituary

William "Bill" Wight Bill Wight, a respected major league pitcher, and scout with the Atlanta Braves for 32 years, passed away on May 17th while on vacation at Mt. Shasta, CA, at the age of 85 years. Born in Rio Vista, CA, he grew up in Oakland, CA. Bill was drafted by the well known scout, Joe Devine, of the Yankees, while he was still a junior in high school. His pitching career spanned 12 years in the majors, and he continued his career in baseball with scouting until he retired at age 76. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janice; son, Larry Wight and wife, Bettie; grandson, Bill Wight and wife, Alison; granddaughter, Susan Walters and husband, Bill; and dear friend, Bob Cavalier. Bill was very excited about the coming arrival of a great grandson. His wit, humor, and gentle nature will be greatly missed. Family and friends are invited to the Memorial Service on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 2:00 PM at EAST LAWN MORTUARY, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, CA 95841. M Quinn

June 26, 2007

I am Bill's third cousin, M Quinn. Steve Quinn is my father. I am sorry to learn of Bill's passing. I tried to contact Bill, several times, over the past few years. I remember fondly our visits to Aunt Laura and Uncle Bert. If Bill was pitching, and on T.V., everything stopped , until he was no longer on the mound. If Bill was in town, he would drop in for a few minutes to say "hi!" Aunt Laura showed us Bill's drawings and newspaper articles, from her cedar chest, each time we visited. May God comfort you at this time of loss.

I was sorry to hear of Bill's passing. In '65 he signed me to a contract with the Houston organization.

Having worked with me on my pitching for several months, his knowledge and guidance helped me immensely. I found him to be a very likable and respected man. What he was and what he did I respected, but what I remember about Bill was his modesty and his good character, which I respected above all. He will be missed in the baseball world.
