Mr. Piccioli was a member of Lincolnshire Fields Country Club, which is where I met him and his family. I learned of his passing today, and am deeply saddened and shocked. He was a wonderful, kind, generous man, a real gentleman. Although I only knew Mr. Piccioli through my job, it was easy to see what a rare person he was. His absence will be felt. Everyone who was lucky to know him was and is better for it. My thoughts and prayers are with his wonderful family.

I just heard the news and wanted to leave a comment. I haven't seen Rich since I was a young kid, yet have vivid memories of the joy he brought to our house every time he stopped by. The world needs a lot more people like him. I am privileged to have known such a truly great person.

Rich was a class act gem of a guy! We sat through many, many swim meets with Rich and Janet watching our daughters swim and in all those years I only heard goodness and kindness in his words. How appropriate then one of his last "unknown" acts of kindness was going the extra mile to help out a college student at SIU-C. One, small, simple act of kindness that is representative of a life well lived - how appropriate!

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Rich's accident and passing, and I extend my sincere sympathy to Janet, Michael, Laura, and all other family and friends. I worked with Rich twenty-some years ago at the University and remember, when Michael and Laura were small, that Rich took great delight in sharing stories about his children. When we attended business luncheons, Rich would load up his coat pockets with leftover cookies to "take home to the kids." I was never sure if the goodies actually made it home to the kids or if Rich had a secret sweet tooth to satisfy! However, I also remember that Rich had such a "salty" tooth that he struggled mightily every Lent to give up potato chips! Rich's time here with us on earth was far too brief. Godspeed, Rich, and I hope there are potato chips in Heaven!

I will miss seeing Rich's smiling face everyday walking down the hall. I remember 2 Xmas' ago, when my parents went to the party and Rich talked with them for about 1 1/2 hours about everything. The 3 of them had alot in common. I was very impressed at how he made the time to really get to know them. He will be deeply missed.

He will be greatly missed.

My husband and I send our deepest condolences and sympathy to all of his family. We were travelling from WI to AL and made a decision to take highway 51 for the scenery, and it was unfortunate for Mr. Piccioli but I believe a GOD gift that we were first on the scene. I am a registered nurse, stopping when we realized there were no medical people. I want you to know he was not alone and I held his hand and offered comforting words, as it was the only thing I could do. I was widowed several years ago and always lamented he was alone... so I've spend a couple of restless nights thinking of his family and looked today and found this site. As I said my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. As a mother, grandmother seeing his gold wedding band I could not help but think he was someones father and grandfather.....and how very rapidly life can change. Embrace his memory and know all was done that could be done. God Bless...Rebecca Crofts 218 349-5728

Our family was shocked and saddened to hear that the world has lost a truly wonderful and kind man. We met Rich when our children were in school together and they often played together. Once when our kids were home without us they thought they heard a noise and Rich dropped whatever he was doing and drove over to check the house and make sure everything was ok.
Rich was a very wonderful person whose love for and pride in his family always showed.
We moved away from Champaign quite some time ago but often remember the Piccioli's and what a great family they are.
You are all in our prayers.
Love,

To all the Piccioli's...
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autum rain.
When you wake in the morning hush.
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight of night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
You all are in our hearts and minds forever and always. We will miss Rich's smiling face. We love you all.

My son, Erik met Mr. Piccioli on Thursday, April 17th at approximately 3:00PM. Erik is a student at SIU-C and was purchasing new plates for his vehicle. He didn't have the correct form of payment with him so Mr. Piccioli offered to give him a ride clear across campus to get his wallet. My son said Mr. Piccioli was such a nice man. He learned in the short time they conversed that Mr. Piccioli was a fellow military man and had served in Vietnam (Erik is in the Air Force) and that he was very proud of his family and very much enjoyed his job. Erik was very saddened when he read yesterday's paper. He asked me to convey his condolences to the family he had recently learned of, from Mr. Piccioli. Erik didn't know the highly regarded position that Mr. Piccioli held within the Secretary of State; he only knew him as a kind, helpful, fellow military man. My son was very impressed. God Bless your family and please find comfort in how many ways Mr. Piccioli touched so many lives.
