Henry Adler Obituary

ADLER, Henry Sept. 30, 2008 - Drummer, world renowned music teacher, author and publisher, passed away at the age of 93 in Dunedin. His career in music spanned over 70 years. Henry played in some of the great bands during the big band era and went on to open a music store in the heart of Times Square in New York City where many of the finest musicians of the time gathered. Many well known percussionists came to Henry for instruction. He became both teacher and mentor to many of them. He also published and wrote many music instruction books for both students and professionals. Henry was an 1988 inductee into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, was a Mason for over 50 years, and a Shriner. He leaves his daughters, Valerie Capetta and Karen Brocklehurst; son-in-law, Ernest Capetta; and grandchildren, Gary Capetta, Jeffrey Capetta and Amy Capetta. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, 4405 DeSoto Road, Sarasota, FL 34235.

Dear Valerie and Karen, we were saddened by the news of Henry's passing. My Father, Mother, brother and myself loved Henry! My Dad Peter played with Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. He had great respect and admiration for your Father! My younger Brother Dean DeLuke studied with Henry in the mid 1970's in his Times Square studio on West 46st. Dean idolized Henry and is still playing professionally today. On behalf of the DeLuke Family, we would like to send our sincere condolences to you and your family. Sincerely, Peter DeLuke Jr./San Diego, CA.

Henry was such a special man. He was my parents' best friends' father! I clearly remember my brother Ricky sharing a birthday with him. He took my son down to his basement and gave him a private drum lesson, my son was 4 at the time. He loved his wife Yola almost as much as his favorite; flanken in the pot!! He will be missed by his family but remembered for his patience and sense of humor. We will miss you Henry.

I was lucky enough to study with Henry on the recommendation of my previous teacher, Walter Garces. His concepts and personality had a huge impact on me and are now making their way to my students. He was a gem of a man and will not be forgotten.

Henry was my teacher and friend, but so much more.He shared with me so many insights and tips that have allowed me to follow my dream to be a working drummer for over 30 years.I was hoping to see him and thank him again in person. His lessons and jokes will live on in my heart, and all the students I have taught and will teach in the future.
Thank you Henry.

Henry Adler was a genius of the drumming world of educators. He was a strict, but generous teacher, giving much advice, candor and wisdom with every lesson he taught. He was fun to be with, just to hang at his store was an education. His books are iconic- I am a better person for knowing Henry.

Mr. Adler was one of a kind, a bright and warm person who was guided by his passion for music and music making! During his long career he influenced countless drummers with his playing, teaching, drum shop and books.

On behalf of NAMM, the International Music Products Association, I offer our thoughts and prayers to his entire family. We are grateful for his daughters support in ensuring an Oral History interview was completed for the NAMM Resource Center last year. A tribute to Mr. Adler with a clip from that video taped interview will be posted on the NAMM web site later this week.

He will be missed and long remembered.
