William Howard Obituary

WILLIAM REED HOWARD

William R. (Bill) Howard, (86), formerly of Winston-Salem, and former President and Chief Executive Officer of Piedmont Airlines passed away on Saturday, January 17 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville Georgia. He was born on May 26, 1922, in Wheatland, Wyoming as the son of Bert and Jane Howard.

He spent his childhood years in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, learned to fly at age 16 and then served in the Eighth Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he attended George Washington University, where he earned both undergraduate and Law degrees.

In 1952, he married his college sweetheart, Lucy Moore of Greensboro, Georgia and together they raised three sons.

Upon graduation in 1956, he was hired by the Gambrell Law Firm, and assigned to work with Eastern Airlines in New York City. In 1967, he resigned from the firm and went to work for Eastern Airlines as Legal Council and Vice President of Legal Affairs. In the ensuing years, he rose to the position of Executive Vice President with Eastern before leaving in 1978 to join Piedmont Airlines as Senior Vice President of Industry Affairs.

Howard led Piedmont through its most dramatic growth, leading it from a regional carrier to its status as a major U.S. airline serving the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and London, England. In 1984, Piedmont was named the "Airline of The Year" by Air Transport World Magazine and was often cited as the most successful U.S. airline in the post-deregulation environment. He treasured his years with Piedmont and was humbled by the loyalty and kindness of the Piedmont family.

Howard received numerous personal honors and awards during his career, including

Alumnus Of The Year by George Washington University and C.E.O. of the year by Financial World Magazine. He also served on the Board of Directors of a number of companies including Wachovia Bank, Republic Steel and First Travel Corp.

After retiring from Piedmont, Howard assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Trans World Airlines, and was later involved in numerous business ventures both within and outside the travel industry.

In addition to his passion for aviation, he had a great love for sports cars, antique automobiles, ham radio, boating, motorcycles, electronics and playing the organ that remained with him to his last days. He also enjoyed traveling the world, auto racing and watching pro football.

He is survived by his three sons, Thomas Howard and wife Stacy Chrysson Howard of Lewisville, NC,. Rev. David Howard and wife Deanna Coggin Howard of Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland and William Howard, Jr. and his wife Allison Howard of Newnan, Georgia. To Tom, Dave and Bill - your father was a great and admired leader in the airline industry. His wisdom, foresight and appreciation of the many employees that worked for Piedmont was his legacy. He encouraged "self determination"...or in other words....he encouraged his fellow employees to "do the right thing" for the company and its customers. Without your father's vision there would have been no "west coast", the dramatic expansion and no London. He was an inspiration to so many of us at Piedmont. I am so glad I was able to visit with him recently. Just talking with him brought back fond memories of his leadership. He lived life to the fullest and was an optimist to the end. With deepest sympathy....Dan

Bill was a wonderful and caring man and was instrumental in making Piedmont such a successful airline. I am so glad that he spent his last months with his kind and loving family. I remember his wife, Lucy, when we all resided in Winston-Salem. They were a wonderful couple and family. I send all my love to his wonderful boys, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren. Bill, Lucy and their family were wonderful people and I am glad to say they were our friends. I was pleased that Mike and I talked to him recently and that he sounded great and was so happy and content. Bill was a fine man and an inspiration.

Bill Howard was an amazing friend, husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. His kindness and generosity will live forever in our hearts. I am fortunate to call him my friend, but blessed to call him the best father-in-law a girl could ever have. Now you have earned your second set of wings and heaven has now received an incredibly kind angel. My dearest father-in-law, May you rest in peace and soar above the clouds. We love you.

We are so sorry for your loss. Nothing I can say will make this easier for you. Just take your time and grieve. We are sorry we never had the chance to meet your Dad. Wanted to on so many occasions. Bill, if you are any indication of what kind of man your father was, it was truly "OUR" loss not to have had the privilege.
With much love,

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you all. I wish I had been able to meet some of you when I was by the hospital last Thursday evening. The family of such a sweet man must be very special. I only knew Mr. Bill a short time, but I know he was precious to all of us on the DirectCare team.

What a gentle soul he was. I am very glad that through my journey here on earth I was granted the gift to meet Mr. Howard. He touched the world just by being here through his professional and personal life. God will probably put him in charge of his Angel Flight Plan so no worries wondering if your gaurdian angel is with you. I pray peace and grace for you and yours. Sincerely, Beth Chambers, Direct Care Nurse

I feel very priviledged to have known Mr. Howard. He loved his 'boys' and their families so much and was so very proud of all of you. I will remember him always and with great affection.

I am so gratiful to be the very first individual to sign this memorial for such a great man. I hope one day to speak with the family.
