Robert Fontaine Obituary

Robert (Bob) Joseph Fontaine 1932 ~ 2006 Robert (Bob) Joseph Fontaine, 74, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2006. Bob was born on November 10, 1932 in The Bronx, New York to his loving parents Amos Joseph and Gertrude Josephine Fontaine who preceded him in death. Bob met the love of his life, Eileen, in his junior year at Mount St. Michael High School in New York. They married on December 26, 1953. Bob received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Manhattan College in New York City in 1955. He spent 20 years with North American Rockwell Corporation's Rocketdyne Division in Canoga Park, California and McGregor, Texas. He was instrumental in the development of the F-1 rocket engine used to launch the Apollo missions into space. The Space Program was near and dear to him and he was honored to have been a part of sending the first man into space and landing the first man on the moon. In 1975, Bob went to work for Eimco Process Equipment Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. He retired in 1995 and continued to do some consulting work for a couple of years. After retirement, Bob and Eileen fulfilled their dream of traveling all over the world. His first and foremost love was his family. He leaves behind his wife, Eileen; his son, Steve Fontaine of Salt Lake City; his daughters, Kathy (Scott) Decker of Colleyville, Texas and Jean Marie (Greg) Westfall of Reno, Nevada; six beautiful grandchildren, Bryan, Sean, Lyndsey, Tim, James (J.R.) and Bradley. Grandpa and I had some great times together. He was always at my baseball games no matter how hot it was. I remember the time we got stuck in a mud pile. Grandpa knew exactly what to do, put the truck in four wheel drive and got us right out of that mess. He would always let me go to the horse races with him He taught me all I know about horse races and gambling. I will always remember going to the booze store with him,and getting a lollipop. I miss him a lot and know he is watching over me!

Eileen, Kathy, Steve & Jean,
No words can express the sadness we feel for all of you for the loss of your wonderful husband, father & grandfather. Our family was so fortunate to spend many fun times with him in Lake Tahoe. I will always see him sitting at the table by the pool playing gin with the guys, or doing crossword puzzles with Scott - His eyes always lit up when one of you or his grandchildren were around. You were all truly blessed - We'll all miss him.

Our love and prayers are with you all.

I was a young engineer right out of Oregon State when I met Bob, Eileen, and Kathy in 1954. Bob and I worked together in the organization that became Rocketdyne.

The Fontaine family took this bachelor under their wing and we had many great times together. After I met my wife-to-be at Rocketdyne, Bob agreed to be a groomsman at Dee's and my wedding in 1958.

Our families have been in friendly contact ever since. Dee and I greatly miss Bob and wish all his survivors whatever future peace and happiness they can find.

We knew and valued Bob as a caring and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Following the marriage
of his Jean Marie and our Greg, we
would meet with Bob and Eileen for dinner and conversation. It wasn't
uncommon for Bob to have tears of pride in his eyes as he lovingly spoke of his children and grandchildren. God Bless Bob and his devoted wife and family. We will miss him, but never forget him.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares your grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
