Johnnie Huff Obituary

Johnnie Jo Huff, 95, passed away on December 23, 2007. Jo, as her friends called her, was born November 16, 1912 in Gorman, Texas. She was one of four daughters born to Deckard Dee Whitley and his wife Winnie. She grew up in Lubbock, Texas where she was in the first graduating class of the new Lubbock High School. Jo was the most popular girl in her class and the head cheerleader. She attended Texas Technological College where she met and married Robert J. "Red" Huff of San Antonio. After marriage she moved to San Antonio and lived here ever since. Jo's life revolved around her family, her church, her dogs and the San Antonio Spurs - she was a fervent fan. She is survived by her 3 children: Dr. Robert W. Huff of San Antonio and his wife Gayla, Sarah E. Boyd of Brownwood and her husband Gary and by Joanna Love of Sugar Land and her husband Paul. The children each have 3 children and there is a total of 18 great grand children. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church for over 70 years, she served as Director of the Preschool Departments for ten years and she also did volunteer work at the church before and after that time. She worked at the church's Fourth Street Inn serving meat on Fridays until after her ninetieth birthday. She remained active and drove her car to church until after age 90. Jo worked for years at the Baptist Book Store and she also was the top salesperson for Stanley Home Products in Texas during the 1950s. She had a great love of animals and dogs were her favorites - she always had animals large and small, inside and outside. Her beloved dog Maxine died several years ago and could not be replaced. Her appreciation of the Spurs was a great joy to her and her favorite players were David Robinson and Tim Duncan - she kept up with them through all 4 championships. Jo Huff was a gently, gracious woman who never met a stranger. She was loved by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Kingsley Place at the Medical Center where she lived for the last months of her life and to the Bethany Hospice who gave everyone so much support. Her memorial service will be at the First Baptist Church Wilson Chapel at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2008. We request that donations be made to the Television Ministry of the First Baptist Church in place of flowers.
