Russell Ellington Obituary

Russell Ellington - SAVANNAH- Russell Ellington died on Saturday morning, September 1, 2007, at Saint Joseph's Hospital. The Jefferson County native lived in Savannah most of his life. Russell graduated from Beach High School in 1956. He attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA, where he received his B.S. degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1960. He did further studies at University of Georgia and Georgia Southern University. He spent 2 years with the New York Giants. His professional football career was interrupted because of injuries. He began his teaching career at his Alma Mater that spanned for three decades. During 15 years at Beach High School, Coach Ellington won 482 of 529 games (91%). He captured five State and one National Championship. He then won the Georgia High School Association Class AAA State Championship during the first year of integration in 1967. From Beach, Ellington went to Savannah State College (University), which had been the "doormat" in the SIAC before he took over in 1976. During his nine years at Savannah State, he won three SIAC regular season and tournament titles, achieving an impressive collegiate record of 276-52. He left to coach the internationally renowned Harlem Globetrotters. After traveling to 122 countries with the Globetrotters, in 1993, Ellington returned to Savannah to start the first basketball team at Savannah Technical School (College). This phenomenal coach led that team to the National playoffs in Kansas City. Always ready for a new challenge, Coach Ellington returned to his college alma mater, Morris Brown College, to serve as Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director for several years. After a brief retirement, Coach Ellington was "inspired" to return to Beach High School to coach and teach one last time. His legend continued with the 2006-2007 Beach High School basketball team by leading them to the state playoffs. Coach Ellington won numerous awards during his coaching career on every level, and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in May 2007. Other affiliations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, R.M.G. Civil Rights Museum Board of Directors, Board of Directors W. Broad St. YMCA, Georgia High School Sports Association and the South Eastern Quarter back Club; and many other social and civic organizations. A man of faith and family, Russell Ellington was joyfully married to Betty W. Ellington for thirty seven years. He was an active member of Tremont Temple Baptist Church, providing leadership in numerous organizations, including the Financial and Couples Ministry, Pastor's Support, and the Brotherhood. The Circle of Life has been completed and the legend can finally rest. Russell Ellington was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Retha Ellington, and two brothers, Sammy and Jerome. He is survived by his wife, Betty, six children: Russell Ellington (Angela), Eugene A. Washington Sr. (Willie), Patricia Mack (Henry), Dobson Washington, Larry Washington (Cheryl), and Stephanie Nauden (Al), four sisters: Reba Smart, Willie Morrison, Veta Anderson, and Lillie Turner, one brother: Bobby Ellington (Betty), 17 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday September 5, 2007 at A.E. Beach High School Gymnasium from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Tremont Temple Baptist Church at Noon. Rev. Ricky A. Bready, Pastor of Tremont Temple, will be officiating the celebration. Internment will be at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Russell Ellington Memorial Scholarship fund at Wachovia Bank. To The Ellington Family:
My deepest sympathy and condolence to you. Coach Russell and I played football at Beach High. I graduated in 1955. I fondly remember the time I took my family to see the Harlem Globetrotters perform in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. When coach Russell discovered we were in the audience, he extended an invitation for us to join him in the Harlem Globetrotters dressing room at half time. My sons were 12 and 10 years old and they were blown away by the invitation! Coach Russell had each team member autograph a large wall poster for each of my sons. They still have and treasury those posters as a reminder of one of their most enjoyable moments from childhood. Brother Russell was an Alpha Phi Alpha Brother who truly believed in and practiced “Each one, teach one, reach one!” Thank you and rest in peace my fraternal brother.

Let There Be Memories. Let there be memories--fond recollections of special occasions and everyday things. Let your heart start on its journey to healing by feeling the comfort remembering brings. Let there be memories--pictures, mementos, and favorite stories both funny and sad. Let your mind wander the paths of remembrance, reliving the joys and the good times you've had. Let there be memories--signs that our loved ones remain near in spirit long after they're gone...tender, surprising, heartwarming, and welcome--sweet proof of the promise that love will live on.

To the whole entire Ellington family(especially Mrs. Ellington, Patricia, Eugene and Dobson) You all have my deepest sympathy with the loss of the Best Coach in the United States. We all will miss him. We have memories that we will always remember about him. When we were at the National Guard Armory playing Johnson or Tompkins, or Savannah High 35 years ago, I can just see Coach Ellington cool as a cucumber with his arms folded coaching like he never coached before. Those were the good old days and we will forever treasure. I, along with my son went to Fort Valley this year when Beach HIgh was in the quarterfinals and that will be my most treasured time that I remember the BEST COACH in the United States.
Once again, please know that you all have so many people praying for each of you in this time of sorrow. We ask God to strengthen each of you as you go through this loss. He was special to all that knew him. He also was such a classy person back then 35 years ago and I believe that he was everybody's role model.
God Bless Each Of you. We know now that Coach Ellington is okay and not in any more PAIN. GOD has him now.
With my most deepest sympathy,

To The Ellington Family:
Thanks for sharing "The Legend" with the world. He has touched so many people in a positive way.Being a Sol C. Johnson Atomsmasher,I looked on him as a rival but later on I got to see what a special man he was.I was working at Savannah Tech when he took teams to the National Junior College Championship. He also was a positive role model for all the students. He was never too busy to reach out to anyone needing advice. There are four members of my fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, who were great local coaches who touched so many lives at Beach, Johnson and Thompkins High Schools. They were: Russell Ellington, Joe Greene, John Myles and Joe Turner. Thanks to the Good Lord for sending them our way. May God grant the Ellington Family comfort and peace during your loss.

My deepest sympathy Mrs. Ellington and family. I fondly remember Coach as a teacher and will never forget the day he threw a rotten potatoe at me for running my mouth. However, he was a very caring teacher who wanted us to become a contributing citizen to society. I will miss him but I will always carry with me the integrity, honesty and the knowledge on how to fight the battles within the war. This was Coach Ellington, creating vibrant, energetic people for tomorrow. He will be missed.

Russell was always a classy guy as far back as the days when he worked at "Sloppy" Joe Bellinger's service station on West Broad and Oak Streets during his High School days. His brother Jerome and I were in the same homeroom cass from 1960-63 and Russell used to loan Jerome that little blue Ford Falcon so that we could go out. Russell truly left a legacy that we all might try to emulate as a good and kind human being. Rest in peace old friend.

I will always remember my dad (Coach Samuel Hicks) and Mr. Ellington. I only attended school in Chatham County (Beach) for three years (10th - 12th grade), and immediately became a sports fan for my school. My dad being a sports lover just like Mr. Ellington took my sister and me to all of the games, in and out-of-town. Yes, I was in Atlanta to see the Bulldogs win in 1967 and watch the Bulldogs and Atomsmashers play for first and second place in 1968.

Mr. Ellington was also my 12th grade chemistry teacher. I remember after graduating and attending Savannah State, one of the courses that I had to take was chemistry. I needed help understanding a problem, so I went to the school during his football practice with my textbook, paper, and pencil in hand. He stopped coaching his team to explain the problem to me and when he knew that I understood he refocused himself back to his teams practice.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God bless each of you.

Russell Ellington, be encouraged, God will take good care of you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Mr. Ellington taught me in the late 60's at A. E. Beach High School. He was always a kind -hearted person and took pride in his duties as a teacher. I know that he will be trully missed by all that knew and loved him. God is with you and you are in my prayers. Mrs. Ellington, Gene, Pat & Family,

Many are called, but few are chosen. There can be little doubt that Coach is among those few who are privileged to have lead a life of service that positively touched the lives of so many others. His countless contributions to the sports and education communities--especially that of his Bulldog family--are without equal.

Now he has answered his final call, but his great legacy will live on well after all of us have completed our earthly journeys. And we can be certain that he has arrived at his resting place to a greeting of, "Well done, good and faithful servant...well done." Thank you, Coach, for all you did for so many of us and thank you, Ellington family, for loaning us your Russ.

To th family of the late Russell Ellington, "Weeping may endureth for a night but joy cometh in the morning". We would like to extend our condolences for the loss of your loved one. Coach Ellington was a positive influence to many of his co-workers, students and players. He was a man that gave respect and was respected by all. We will always remember him as an excellent coach, mentor and leader. He is most definitely one of the best coaches that ever coached in Savannah, GA. Sleep on Coach Ellington and take your rest, your friends love you but God loves you best!

To Betty and family,
Savannah, and the world has lost a true friend, and leader. It seems as though I've known coach half my life I was a freshman at Beach his last year there in 1976. And during my tenure at Beach you only thought of one Basketball Coach and that was Coach Ellington.

Through volunteer work in the Atheltic Dept. at SSC I landed a job working summers with a program called (NYSP)as a result of Coach Ellington. Coach Joe Turner needed a secretary, Coach Ellingtion and he approached me one day and the rest was history. It was a pleasure working with Coach at SSC during the summers. I remember at the end of each summer the staff could look forward to a low-country boil at coach's house and shoot the breeze about camp. But what I liked most about Coach was that he was fair and took time to teach values in eveyone he came into contact with.

He will be missed in our lives and the community. Sleep on Coach we love you but God loves you best.
Betty- our prayers are with you and your family.
