William Godshalk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2001.
For Love of Wild Bill
James Bond Godshalk had five children and William R. Godshalk was the wildest. When Bill Godshalk was 10 and playing shortstop in Little League, he caught a ball only to drop it when the base runner hit his glove. Bill attacked the other player. James Godshalk walked on to the field and pulled his son back. "He needed me," Mr. Godshalk said. "And I needed him, I did so much."

James Godshalk taught his son sports, and in the process taught him how to calm himself. But Bill Godshalk kept his wild and adventurous heart, even as a 35-year-old vice president at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods in the World Trade Center, said his fiancée, Aleese Hartmann. At a memorial service for his son, James Godshalk was reminded of a verse by James Whitcomb Riley:

Old man never had much to say -

'Ceptin to Jim, -

And Jim was the wildest boy he had,

And the old man jes' wrapped up in him!

When he recited the poem, he substituted "Bill" for the name Jim, and told the story of a wild boy and the father who loved him.

From our first meeting when you took me to lunch at South Union St. Restaurant when you worked with Dean Witter Reynolds, I always appreciated your knowledge and plan for me as a client.

Your ability to allow me to be part of the process is something I recall well.

Another year has gone by...
18 years ago today we physically lost you... But, not the memories or the love that lingers in our hearts...
Today was another beautiful September day. It was spent thinking of you, and all those lost.
Ill head to the beach and take our usual walk.
Give everyone a hug for me and an extra one for your Mom. Keep that grand smile on your face and dont get into trouble pulling any of your silly stunts!

IN MEMORIUM - 9/11
It's been 18 years but I still smile whenever thinking of Bill-Bill Godshalk & his fun loving circle of young friends. He was lost in his prime, just when he had found his stride & the love of his life. He remains sorely missed. Like his family I spent my summers in Buck Hill Falls. I was older than Bill but through my role as the summer arts & crafts counselor with the BHF Camp Club and later co-teenage director I grew to know him & his circle of friends. I loved them all. After his passing I often ran into his mom, Grace. For the past 4 years she'd drop by my new bookshop to swap stories about Bill. I was so sorry to to learn that she had passed away in December of 2018. My thoughts & prayers are with Bill-Bill's sister Jane, her husband John, and their 2 kids as they press on without Grandma Grace & Bill Bill. --Much love, Mary Ruvane

Hi Billy,

Here it is September 11th again. The years go by but not much time passes that you are not thought of, spoken of or missed.

This morning your Mom is at The Garden of Reflection 9 - 11 Memorial in Yardley, once again putting on a grand service remembering those of you who passed that were from Lower Makefield. She and the others involved have designed a breath taking Memorial. The twin water fountain towers are spectacular. The sound of their water flowing is an ease as one walks along the glass wall and reads the names of those who perished on that dreadful morning. I know you would love the place and that you would be so proud of her.

We are all doing okay. We know that you watch over us and feel our love...

WE ALL MISS YOU...

Think of us often, as we do you...
LOVE YOU LOTS...

I have known of Bill's passing for many years but was reading a story earlier today about Tide Football, so I thought of him.
About 25 years ago, I met Bill when I called into Dean Witter Reynolds and was put in touch with him.
He invited me to a lunch seminar that He and Chris Paglia did .
I learned alot that day about Bill, the Company and the Stock Market.
So I became a client and the first stock we came up with was AOL...what a find.
I stayed a client for many years.
May your warm and caring spirit continue to live on with your many friends/family...Roll Tide and Go Eagles Bill.

Hey Bill,

EAGLES SOAR!!!

Your Philadelphia Eagles have won their first Super Bowl!!!

It was a game of games and The Eagles played a great one. The streets of Philadelphia are packed with Eagles Fans celebrating the win. Broad Street has not seen such a celebration since the signing of the Declearation of Independence!

Way cool... I know you'ld be right out there partying with them.

BILLY,

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY"!

It was a grand and glorious day here in the Hamptons. I took the dogs for a walk at lunch time down to Clearwater Beach. One could see across to Conneticut and out to Block Island, it was so clear! I skimmed a few stones for you... I did pretty good...

There aren't too many days I don't think of you... From you saving my tail from some sort of mishap I find myself in or just plain missing you...

We ALL MISS YOU...

To my darling son. I grieve for you missing the life that so many of your family and friends live. I pray any cry for you every day. I cannot part with things that belong to you because they bring me inner peace and a sense of security. Your friends have not given up on you, when I see them they always say your name.

We had two beautiful ceremonies at the Garden of Reflection. On Septemner 10th there was a Candlelight Vigil. About 500 people attended and many children were part of the program or helped.
Sunday morning September 11th there was a Memorial Ceremony where each flight was recognized by the clang oh a fire bell. In between there were songs, poems, prayers and thoughts from families. I told about our last phone call where you said "I'm OK". I know you are Ok because you are in the hands of God.

I love you, MoMo Momot

Hey BILLY,

Time passes so swiftly yet not a day goes by that you are not thought of. Fifteen years... Where did they go?

We watched the memorial today listening to the names being read. A sweet young boy all dressed neatly in his suit had the honor of reading your name today. Just prior to that a lovely woman played a version of "Danny Boy" on her flute. I thought to myself, how appropriate!

Our hearts are filled with love for you. We all miss you, greatly.

Hi Bill,

I always remember working with you at Dean Witter on 110 South Union Street in Olde Town Alexandria Virginia. When I was the young rookie broker in the bullpen you helped teach me the ropes. I still remember the Bubba Gump hat you wore a few times back in 1994. I only learned of your passing a few years ago when I attempted to look you up to hopefully reconnect and have a laugh. I wanted to let you know that I'm still in the business but no longer a rookie, but rather one of the top producers at Wells Fargo Advisors now. I have thought of you often after reading about your story on 9/11. I have never forgotten your wit or sense of humor nor the big heart you possessed. My only regret is that we were not able to reconnect prior to September 11th...Miss you you my friend and bullpen partner at Dean Witter.

September 11, 2014 started off with an 8:30 am Remembrance Ceremony at the Garden of Reflection. The time line of that morning is followed starting with a fire bell ringing for each crash. The bell was followed by a violinist leading into a speaker offering words of comfort and healing. There were beautiful choral and acoustic guitar selections. Poems and reflections from several family members followed.

I miss you so very much...Lots of Love MoMo

Bill and I were room mates at Alabama out freshman year and then he was my fraternity little brother our sophmore year. One fond memory I have of Bill is the weekend we went to visit my home town of Nashvillle TN. We had gone out to dinner that night with my family at a barbecue restaurant called the Sportsman Grill when my younger brother who was like 11 at the time started choking on his food and was turning blue in the face. No one at the table even noticed except Bill who jumped up and dislodged the food. My younger brother still refers to Bill as the guy who saved his life. Thanks Bill for all the great memories! I will never forget the great times

I just sent the following message to Grace Maureen Godshalk via Facebook. I then found this memorial page and wanted to post it here as well in hopes she would see it.

Hello. I hope I am contacting Grace Godshalk who is mother of Bill Godshalk. My name is Mary Coyle, and I grew up in Yardley. My sister Barbara was in HS with Bill at Pennsbury. (I am a few years older and did not know him.) Barbara, my other sister Bernadette, and I went to visit the 9/11 memorial in Manhattan this summer. I wanted to share with you a story from that visit that I must say is probably the most amazing coincidence of my life. We were all walking around separately from one another, taking in the memorial and taking photos. I stopped at a point where I could get the reflection of the new Freedom tower in the reflecting pool. My sister Barbara walked over to me and for some reason, at that moment, I asked her: "What was the name of your classmate who lost his life here on 9/11?" She answered Bill Godshalk. Seconds later I looked down -- having not moved a centimeter left or right -- and whose name was I standing DIRECTLY in front of but William Robert Godshalk. I took a photo and am attaching it here for you. I still wonder how it was possible that of the nearly 3,000 names I came to stand directly in front of his name at the moment I asked about him. I was not looking for it. I didn't even remember his name, which is why I had to ask my sister. In any case, I wanted to let you know. I have thought many times since that day (July 20) to write you but never got around to it. But I could not let this day pass without reaching out to tell you this story. My deepest condolences to you on your loss.

Sincerely,

Mary Coyle

One of my funniest memories of Bill was when he was trying to set up one of his pledge brothers on a blind date. My date missed her ride up to Tuscaloosa and Bill's girlfriend at the time was desperately looking for a blind date for her "little sister" from the sorority. Everybody was practically running from Bill as he went though the house looking for a willing victim. He finally cornered me. Can't tell you all the promises he made to me in exchange for my agreement to go out with this girl. That girl became my wife. Because Bill wouldn't let me off the hook, I now have two beautiful daughters and a wife of 19 years. Both of the girls can tell the story better than I can. But they never tire of hearing about brother Bill. Rest easy. You will never be forgotten.

It was 1981 and we were waiting to be picked up by your mother in the old station wagon to go to hockey practice. We were playing in the parking lot outside the shop class when you let go that wicked wrist shot of yours. I was so determined to stop it when my kick save became a broken window at the school. Being the person you are you took the blame even know it came off my foot. You always took the high road and were a great leader of our team. I always admired your sportsmanship and your willingness to step up and protect your friends and the ones you love. I can only imagine you gave your life on 9/11 protecting your fellow workers and making sure they were safe without regards for your own safety. I think of you often, and know on that day we lost a great American.

Dear Bill,

Eleven years have passed like the blink of an eye. Tomorrow there will be an Honor and Remembrance Ceremony at the Garden of Reflection. I was there today to place your picture on your name plate and I found a beautiful gift from someone who knew you in high school. It was a collage with a photo of you wearing a blue jacket when you were about 14yrs old. There was an unsigned letter and I wish I knew who left it there so I could thank them.

Bill,

"Happy day after your Birthday"!

It has been a rainy week here in the Hamptons. I didn't go to the beach or out to Montauk Downs, as it was just too bitter to do so.

Last month I took my Mom for a visit to your Mom, for their Birthdays. While we were there Will was off from school and so Jane took us all to a beautiful statue garden park for a day. We had a wonderful time. I took some great pictures of Will. He is a ham in front of the camera just as you were!

Bridget looks alot like Jane...

Everyone is well and all seem to be doing fine.

We all miss you greatly, as well as the impact that you would have had on our lives over the years. Heaven only knows what you would have gotten us all into by now! :>}

Know that you are loved. Always have been. Always will be...

It is said that with time the pain fades and that it becomes easier to deal with the loss. Today September 11, 2011 marks ten years since you were taken from us. The pain is not as sharp yet, it is still there. It comes in waves. As for it becoming easier to deal with the loss... it isn't any easier today than it was then.
I find comfort in knowing you are there watching over all of us. I find strength in speaking to you. As you know there is hardly a day that goes by that you are not thought of by one of the family or one of your friends.

This year has been a difficult one for our family as my Dad has left us to join you and Granny. Time and distance does not lessen the love we all feel for any of you.

Bill,
I have no idea how I have made it through these past 10 years without you. We have all walked through a haze into hell and back -- but somehow I keep going with your determined spirit in mind. I know you would want us to live life to its fullest, to enjoy every moment of every day -- and I try. I just miss having my big brother around. I miss the times we would have spent together as adults. I miss the times you would have spent as the best Uncle in the world to my kids. My kids will never meet you, but they sure do know you because you are talked about constantly in our house. (I love seeing Bridget & Will play together because they so remind me of you & me playing when we were younger.)

So as this dreadful anniversary approaches, please know we miss you terribly -- but are trying to make you proud of how we have come through this & how we are trying to live life to its fullest. You will forever be a part of me that is missing.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY"!
With much joy your "understudy" Prince William married his Princess Katherine (Kate) in a beautiful ceromony last Friday. As I watched the wedding I thought of you and Granny watching from above. I am certain the two of you had something to do with the beautiful weather that day.
All is well out here in the Hamptons. I think of you just about everyday and wonder where it was out here that you and your friends used to rent when you would come out here to play golf. I will be off to the beach with the dogs after school today to take that walk along the beach with you.
My parents are doing fine. I spoke with your mom on Monday and will call her again later today. I am long over due for a visit with your parents, Jane, John and the little ones.
On sunday night the news of Bin Ladins death broke on the news. For me it was met with a sense of relief followed by a rush of saddness.
I miss you dearly. The memories of your tenderness, loving ways and of course your silliness / sense of humor wonder into my thoughts often.

Eight years ago in Yardley I took two bottles of beer outside from Pop's house a week after that day and sat and drank one and saved the other for you. Still have it on my bookshelf and will always keep it. Thank you for being the best uncle a kid could have. I miss you and your zest for life. My thoughts are with Pop, Grace, Jane, and you. -Keith

Bill-Bill,
Somehow we have made it through another year without you. We are strengthened and inspired by your love of life. You lived with purpose & determination & joy each and every day. And that joy for life and love of family & friends is the greatest gift of all that you have left behind. I am reminded of this every single day of my life. Your legacy is one to be proud of: Love, joy, happiness, enthusiasm, zest. I am so proud & lucky to have been your little sister.

Billy,
And so here I sit on September 11, 2009
writing you yet another note to let you know I miss you a great deal. As always when the night sky is full of stars I wonder which one is you, looking down and wathcing over us, keeping us safe and wrapped in your love so tight. Know that we think of you often and that you are loved always.
If the weather clears in the morning, I will head off to Main Beach for a walk with you before I go out to Montauk Downs to hit some golf balls. :>)
Left a message for your Mom & Dad today and spoke with John to let them know, I love them all and was thinking of you.
Think of me as I do you, often. Miss you much and love you lots...

Hi Billy,

And so there passes another Birthday! I phoned your Mom and Dad yesterday as well as Jane, John and the little ones!

Didn't get to the beach or the driving range for you due to the bad weather here in the Hamptons, perhaps tomorrow should the weather clear.

While I was downloading our old family slides I came across great pictures of us when we were little!!! I'm going to send them along to Jane and your Mom. Wish you were here to see the pictures. I can only imagine how hard you'd be laughing. :>}

My Dad had emergency surgery yesterday, would you and Granny do me a favor and KEEP WATCH OVER HIM FOR ME.

Think of me as I do you, often. Miss you much and love you lots...

Bill Bill,
I was cleaning out some old papers today and ran across an old notebook that had your name and address in it from my one and only summer at Buck Hill. We only hung out those couple of months, but I will always remember the guy from Yardley with the cool car. (Was it a red '66 camaro?, that's how I remember it anyway) Randomly I decided to Google your name today and found this Guest Book paying tribute to you. Not surprisingly, it sounds like you grew up to be a great guy. I wish I had kept in touch and maintained our friendship, but life has a way of taking us all in many different directions I guess.

That summer hanging out with you and the rest of the Buck Hill crowd was one I will never forget. I was an outsider kid from Philly and you-all made me feel like one of the crowd. Seems to me we may have even played as partners in the boy’s doubles finals that summer. I don't think we won. We had lots of good times doing the kind of things that 15 and 16 year old kids do, and luckily we didn't get in trouble for it.

It appears that your family and friends have done a lot to memorialize you at Buck Hill Falls, and that is a perfect fit. It is the place that I will always remember you from. As the 9-11 anniversary occurs each year I will remember the good times we had together. Thanks for being a great part of my memories.

I didn't know Bill, but I received a remembrance silver band from my dad a few years ago with his name inscribed on it. I keep it in a safe place and I'll always stumble upon it, thinking about this man I never knew. I am so sorry for the families loss; I know what it's like to lose someone before their time.

Prayers and stay strong.

Memo,

Back in India again! It was here I knew of your loss. It is a haunting reminder being here again. Tomorrow is 11 September and I will be going to the Ambassadors residence to pay tribute to those we lost as well as those we lost avenging our fellow Americans. I miss you Bill. I speak of you often. An office mate saw your picture on my desk and asked me who you were…..I was proud to tell him, “that’s my friend Bill Godshalk”. I had to tell him about those amazing summers your Dad took us to Stones, Who and Journey concerts in 1982-1983. We were so young..so full of life. I recall those days often and think of you my friend. I miss you…you are never forgotten!!!!

Hey Billy,
I'm sitting here at my desk at school reading all the previous tributes friends and family have left over the years. It is touching in so many ways to here how you brought love and laughter into their lives. Thank You for being the best you that you could possibly be. I think of you often and miss you greatly.

Hi Bill,

Missing you so much that I turned to your website to read all the letters from your friends. Today is a beautiful blue sky day. I recently came across a poem you wrote in school when you were eight.

"The clouds are like sheep swimming in a sea of blue" Every time I see a blue sky with clouds I look up and think of you and how much I love you.

Lots of love, MoMo

Memo,
Just thinking about you today. Someone I saw today reminded me of you..friends...memories and happiness. I miss you Bill. I wonder how our lives would be different with you WITH us. Your gone...never forgotten and I'm sad I can't talk to you..tell you all that's been happening with Cynthia and I. We're still fighting in Afghanistan....still fighting in Iraq. Though many will forget what happened the day we lost you... I cannot. You're missed Bill..I just wanted you to know!!
