Touri Bolourchi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2001.
Lover of Literature

Twenty-one years ago, Touri Bolourchi; her husband, Akbar; and her two daughters fled Iran when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini closed the schools. As a nurse, educated in England and married to a doctor, she was determined to see her girls properly educated.

After settling in California, Mrs. Bolourchi created a home filled with exotic decorative touches, spicy Middle Eastern food, and books — in French, English, Farsi, Arabic and Italian — that she read obsessively, to herself and to her daughters, said Roya Touran, her elder daughter.

She loved cooking, especially for guests. Dishes requiring a dozen steps and two dozen ingredients did not faze her. "She would look through food and wine magazines," Mrs. Touran said, "read through a recipe and just make it for guests. She was very courageous. And it always worked out."

Mrs. Bolourchi, 69, was a practicing but easygoing Muslim, Mrs. Touran said. "She said her prayers, but she wouldn't fuss about drinking. If Dad or me or my sister wanted a drink, she'd say, "It's O.K., go ahead,' and be laughing. When there was port after dinner, she'd take a tiny sip."

Flying terrified her, but she forced herself into a plane last September to see Mrs. Touran and her grandsons in Boston.

On Sept. 11, she boarded United Airlines Flight 175 for the trip home. "She waved and said, `I'll see you at Christmastime," Mrs. Touran said. "Then she walked away."

Whenever I think of that horrible day, I think of Touri. I was a pharmaceutical sales representative in 2001 with a territory in Beverly Hills. One of my favorite physicians that I called on was Dr. Akbar Bolourchi. When I found out what happened to his beautiful wife,Touri it was the worst news imaginable. Here was a very kind, gentle man and to have that happen to his family brought such grief. I never saw Dr. Bolourchi after that tragic day but I've never forgotten him and always pray for him and his family.

To the family,
Today I read the profile of Touri Bolourchi published in The New York Times of June 2002. She must have been a wonderful mother and wife.
It is so sad to lose someone like that. Thankfully we can look forward to being with our loved ones again. - (The book of Job chapter 14 verses 14,15.)

On 11 September 2014 at the Rising Moon Ranch, I participated in a drum circle of remembrance for the 9/11 victims from California. I drew Touri Bolourchi's name from the meditation bowl. She was the person to whom I focused my thoughts and prayers. I keep Touri and all her dear family in my prayers.

Today, I am thinking of Mrs. Touri Bolourchi and praying for God's Mercy on her and on your family. Although I never had the privilege of meeting her, I was touched by her kindness when I received an award in her name while studying at the UCLA School of Nursing in 2005. It has been 10 years since that tragic day, but the pain it leaves in all of our hearts feels like it just happened yesterday.
May God help our nation continue to heal and make humanity not fall prey ever again to such horrible circumstances.
I wish your family peace today and every day.

By a strange happenstance I have come to know a Bolourchi in the last ten days. Her name is Lenore. I do not now know her relationship, if any, to Touri. Even if no relationship exists

between Touri and Lenore, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to Dr. Abkar Bolourchi and his family for the loss of his wife and to the children for the loss of their mother. Recently widowed, I know

the trauma of death, still sense my wife's presence. I think, Dr. Bolourchi, your tribute to Touri's life one of the most moving I have ever read.

On June 6, 2002, 1 mile was walked to honor the life of Touri and all the family friends and loved ones she left behind. May you find some comfort in knowing that you do not grieve alone.

Touri, although gone, you will never be forgotten. May you rest in peace.

Hi I need your help you see I'm trying to make sure every family that lost a love one receive a homemade quilt. When I seen what happen I knew I had to do something so as I was crying and praying the Lord answered my prayers by telling me to make quilts for everyone. Not a very easy task especially when I really don't know where to start. I started making quilts and soon ask my friends and everyone in our wonderful country to help. Soon I had 1554 quilts ready to go. We took them to New York and hand deliver them to Pier 94 where the families wereon Dec 16,17, and 18. I know my job isn't done and I have to continue so I came across a list of all the victim and decided to see if maybe there friends or families could help me try and bring some comforter to the parents or spouse. If you need to check me out please do ask our Senator Harkin from Iowa phone number is 515-284-4574 and ask Dianne Liepa what my mission is with the Freedom Quilts. By the way my name is Betty Nielsen. I was on America 01 and Good Morning America. You can also call Good Morning America and ask for Catherine Upin one of ABC Productor to check the facts out. I'm trying to make sure and not miss anyone so please if you can help me by contact his beloved wife and telling her what I plan on doing she can email me or you can and let me know if it's okay. Right now I have made and collected 1174 and still working at making more. I need your help in order to completed my project. I hoping get all the families that lost a love one from the Sept 11 attacked and present them with a quilt. A quilt of love and comforter. I'm also thinking that maybe your senator from your state can line something up and I could bring quilts to hand over to the families. Please if you have any idea and would want to help me bring some comforter please talk to the families even the senator of your state and perhaps we can so something special. We here in Iowa want to show that it doesn't matter how far you are we are thinking of them and praying and we also want to give them a sign of comforter and love. What better way of showing that this country is great and that we care for one another. Thank you for listening.

What a warm love story of 42 years together. We are deeply sorry for your great loss. May warm memories of times together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Touri.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I am sitting here on Christmas Eve and I still felt like I have done nothing to help after the terrorist attacks. I know I can't and wont ever understand all the pain and hurt you are going through. I still cry out to God everyday wondering why such an awful thing could happen to this country. But I do know one thing that is for sure, God was with every single person that day, there is just no doubt in my mind. As of now that is the only thing that brings me peace. I pray for the family of Touri Bolourchi, time will heal. Please know that there are people out there feeling the same way you do...I did not know a person on a flight or in the World Trade Center, but I still grieve everyday. Please remember God is with you and with this beautiful country
